I'm probably going to head out today and grab some ammo for my 308 Remington 700. The ammo I'll be buying will be used for big game hunting. I've scanned through the internet trying to get reviews of what is available to me and what the best buys would be. I've pretty much ruled my selection down to the following:

Winchester Super X 150 or 180gr (20 rounds for $17)
Winchester Supreme Elite XP3 150gr (20 rounds for $35)
Remington Express Core Lokt 150 or 180gr (20 rounds for $20)

Any suggestions or recommendations? Would any of these rounds be acceptable for longer range shooting?

308 For big game

Always use premium ammunition for hunting and select the proper bullet weight for the size of the game. IE: 150 for deer size and 180 for moose or elk size animals. Or 165 premium for most anything. To find which shoots best is a game of shoot and shoot some more, all firearms are a little different.

If you're not going to reload, like Tick says, the 165 grain bullet will give you the best accuracy out of most .308's. However, you'll still have to try as many brands as you can to find the one or two your rifle will shoot well. And the price per box means nothing. Your rifle may shoot the least expensive well and not shoot the most expensive worth beans. A 2" group at 100 yards is good enough for most game at distances you see deer/moose at in Ontario.

for moose, there's nothing as good as the Federal HE.. 180 gr. 2740fps.
for deer... Hornady sells good, cheap ans accurate.
Federal loads some Sierra gameking 165 I believe. Canadian tire has them.

Winchesters never grouped good enough in my rifle, So I don't know ...

Thanks for the replies. Glad I didn't make it to the shop to buy the ammo I listed. Anybody know where to buy Federal ammo in the GTA? Most of the local Canadian Tire's don't sell Federal .308 ammo.

Can Tire carries only the Sierra bullet one.... Ask them to bring it for you !
For the heavy load, Elwood Epps or some of the big warehouses from out west.... This is a good excuse to undertake that 3hr trip to Orillia and buy one more gun....

we'll gladly answer your question about where to buy ammo for that one too...
