i have done a fair bit of experimental loading for the .308 win in 22 inch sporter barrels , i have found a lot of low velocity loads that shoot 1 1/2inch groups, or slightly smaller , but not much for velocity below near maximum loads , it seems that you must work up to the max loads in the manuals to be safe and achieve anywhere near useable velocity , powders used are imr-4895 , imr 4064, rl-15 varget, win748,blC-2, any ideas? i think i may give up and buy a 30-06 ,, wade:confused:

You could look at some compressed loads if you're looking for speed. However compress loads are not recommed for semi's, it could blow the receiver. Hornady has a factory load that they call a light magnum 29xx fps on a 150 grn interlock. Dunno about the accuracy though.

Here is a website that has .308win loads and other rifle loads. Just read the Caveat and warnings.

your experienc with one particular rifle doesnt mean every 308 win shoots best with mild loads

some guns are just turds, plain and simple

308 load

I am shooting a 308 with 150 Hornady's over 45.5 grain of H4895. The rifle has a 20 inch barrel but never had the chance to chrony the loads yet.:) This load shoots into 1/2 inch at 100 yards.

lyman #48 manual shows43 grs imr 4064 , 2550 f.p.s. with that load i get2440 fps. max load as far as i go. 1.5 inch group , 42 grs imr 4064 gets 2360 fps getting to slow for me, i will try varget and rl-15 maybe better velocity with 180 gr bullets, i am not wanting all the velocity i can get, i hope to get 2500 fps with 180 gr , as in the manual shows 2600fps, so i dont think 2500 fps is unresonable, i have been useing hornady bullets, the only real success i had is 150 hornady with imr 4064, 2800 fps, 1.25 in group , thats good, even 2700fps would be good enough,i dont like putting max loads in any cases, i dont want to stress anything,, wade

I'm shooting 165 gr acubonds over 44 gr of reloder 15, it's very accurate in my gun and it is getting 2650 fps velocity.

where did you get the 165 Accubonds?? I have a couple boxes of them coming my way, I was pleasantly suprised to see them available :D although the 168 tsx works so well I wonder why I need to try the AB

I have a Remington 78 with a 22 inch barrel. I was load testing at the range with a friend who was shooting a 30-06. With 150s, he was getting 3006 fps(ironic) with one grain over max and with 47.5 grains of Varget I was getting 2980. I was getting 2565 with 44.5 grains of Varget and 180 grain Sierra Pro hunters. We were shooting in late fall and the temperature was quite cool. I didn't read any pressure signs for any of my loads.

got them at P&D in edmonton, I'm not sure why I bought them either, mostly because the whole only shooting 168 gr TSX in every 30 calibre rifle is a bit boring. My 308 will only be a deer rifle and no real need for the TSX i guess.

There are a whole bunch of threads on 24hourcampfire about accubond failures, they suggest they are nothing more than slightly tougher ballistic tips, I guess I'll find out this fall. P&D has a great selectioin of bullets and primers, they will drop them on the bus to you anytime, very god to deal with, prices slightly higher than wholesale but no attitude.

heres some velocitys from today 165 gr, with rl-15, w/w cases,cci-200primers,
43grs-2344 fps
44grs-2400fps
44.5 max in lyman #48 book 2460 fps, i have got 2600fps with varget, i guess that with 165 is the best i am going to get, i have tried these loads in a sav-99and a mod-700 both .308 win , i guess its o.k. but sure wouldnt buy another. 30-06 is all around better with any bullet bigger than 150 gr, with shorter barrels, maybe it needs 24 inch barrel minimum???????? wade

Just curious ... what is wrong with 2600 fps with a 165 gr bullet or 2800 fps with a 150 gr.

You are not going to have a problem with deer or moose at those velocities. Unless you are going to be shooting past 300 m it will not matter that much.
