308 win max effective range

WOW...you guys must have much better eyesight and be much better marksmen than ME...I can hardly SEE a deer at two hundred yards....but I know I can hit him at 100 yards and kill first shot....It would have to be extremely good conditions before I would shoot at anything much farther out....Unquestionably the .308 is capable of much greater range, but anybody claiming to make kills beyond 300 yards I would suspect of cyber bragging...

I've made one long shot and that was in the range of 450 yds on a Mule Deer Doe. I was using a model 70 in 300 WM and with that particular rifle I'd done more in the way of load testing than I've done with any other rifle I've ever owned.

A while back on another site, a video clip was shown of a one shot kill on an Elk at 7oo + yds. Way past anything I'd ever attempt. I watched that video I don't know how many times and the biggest variable to my way of thinking was the noticeable different breeze velocities between the shooter and the Elk. I didn't call BS on the post, but I did 'question' the choice to take a hunting shot like that.

I recieved a response from some guys on the south part of the island, and an invite to join them at the military range in Naniamo for some long range shooting. I brought a friend with me for the outing, hs4570, and we had an enjoyable eye opening afternoon and were given graphic example as to what can be done long range, by guys that know what they're doing and with the right equipment.

Don't know the exact maximum effective range for a .308, but it's at least 100 yards more than a .30-06. :stirthepot2:

Seriously though, in response to the "cyber bragging", my farthest whitetail was 487 yards with my Blaser R93. That was ranged from my blnd before shooting on a stationary feeding deer. I know many others have shot farther.

Thr longest shot I've ever made at a deer was a mule deer doe about 5 years ago at 355 yards, with a 308.

The round is capable past my abilities

I think for the average hunter that doesn't have any long range practice, 300 yards is a long long ways. Guys that typically sight in at 100 yards shouldn't mess with really long shots.
If you want to shoot 400 yards or more, you should be practicing at that distance, and your rifle should be sighted to it's maximum range. That is, for the bullet you are using, your rifle should be sighted so that at any range out to your expected longest shot, your bullet remains in the kill zone of the animal you are after, preferably well within.
Once you start shooting further than your effective point blank range, you really should have a range finder.
All of the above, you need TONS of practice.

come out here and ill show you lots of shots and clean kills on deer past 300 yards . i put over 1500 rounds through my target rifle a year ( 308) and if the rite shot presents itself i have no issues shooting and hitting farther then 300 yards

Since we are all betting!!

I'm in !!

But I cheat, I still hunt :p

Better eyesight? I was out last weekend and I could clearly see unaided a deer in all the coulees here easily past 500m. They are pretty easy to see. My hunting partner and I debated for 10 mins whether or not we should attempt a 500m (LRF confirmed) because there were 3x coulees filled with snow in between. We decided to pass - we are too darn lazy I guess - I don't need doe meat bad enough to drag it that far...
