.308 win powder

Anyone try TAC with lighter bullets...Nosler data shows it gives top velocity with 125 grainers in the 308.

Trying to save my Varget for match loads and TAC is readily available.

When Wholesale Sports shut down I got a whole bunch for a very good price. It gave me top-end velocities and very decent accuracy with 168 and 178grn match bullets out of different semi-autos, mainly M-1A and AR-10 types. You could probably load a lot hotter out of a bolt gun. Not sure it would help accuracy any but it's a thought. I can't say I have ever loaded a bullet that light into .308 so no advice for you there unfortunately.

That’s because 4831 is way too slow of a burn rate for the .308 Win………

4831 shines in stuff like the .270 Win, and most .30 Mags etc.
Gotcha. I had bought H4831SC for .30 mags but one of my reloading mentors said it was a good 308 powder. I looked today and don't see it listed in the books, so for 308 anyway I'll scratch it off the list

If the manuals specify H4831 and NOT H4831SC - what's the reason for that? The only thing I can think of is case capacity, it specify's SC for heavier projectiles, so maybe it's to avoid a compressed load?

I have BLC2, Varget, CFE223 and some IMR3031, for plinking in a bolt gun, 150-155 gr projectiles, 308 win, sounds like Varget or BLC2 is best?

IMR 4895 is my go to for my 308 loads. Works great warm weather/cold weather for me in my rifle with my chosen projectiles.
Can't find locally in southern Ontario so unfortunately I get to start load development all over again with a new powder I haven't found yet.

another for varget and does not change too much on temperature which is a big plus.

Varget is my #1, well...before COVID anyway, when it was available and not the current mental prices.
Thankfully, I have a stash of D4064, half grain less then my varget loads produces same velocity and same accuracy, bit dirtier, little more scrubbing required after a range session, but I can live with it for the price.

If you increase bullet weight a little, I can vouch for IMR3031 shooting 168gr SMK out of a Tikka consistently getting 3/4" or less groups. I've also played with it at distance and an 8" plate is super simple at 550 yards

Copy that. Found some load data for 3031 in a Sierra manual today, for 308 win, after some digging. Thank you

BL-C(2) and 3031 are excellent OG powders for .308 as far as my experience goes. 3031 seems to have produced some crazy low SD and great velocities for 150 FMJ and 165SP bullets looking at my Chrono data. BL-C(2) was literally designed for 7.62 150FMJ so no surprises there. I have burned tons loading bulk 7.62N and 5.56. Mostly my opinion through observation but I am pretty sure it served as the starting point for CFE223, which makes a much better 7.62 powder than .223 ironically. I said it before but if you go by velocity instead of the completely out of whack from all sources CFE223 data it really is a great powder for .308.

Another vote for TAC.. I use it to load 147-175gr bullets, measures great and loads are accurate.

So many good powders for the 308 but After using IMR4063, 3031, 4895, W748, Varget and some others my rifle showed a preference for Accurate 2520 all with the 155 Palma.
