.308 win.. The forgotten hunting calibre??

I've never owned anything else in .30-cal for the last 35 years. A .308 does everything I need as long as I use the right loads. Always has. :)

I havnt read the thread yet but I intend too, I thought I would give my opinion on the new-to-me .308 Win cartridge as a hunting round.

When I decided back in the day my first "big game" rifle, I went with a 270, following that I wanted bigger but because everyone had a 30-06 or a 308 I went with 35 whelen....... because the others seemed "boring".....

Now im experienced in hunting an know enough about rifles an calibres, I recently bought a Boring 308..... If I had of been boring 6 years ago I would of Saved some serious Bacon on Rifles, Ammunition etc an still got the Job done just as well as any of the Rifles I own today.

It may be somewhat Boring, or in Aus, very very common but Boy o Boy does it thump Game just as dead as any other Calibre ive used.

Im now a Big fan of the 308, mainly because it is in the Tikka t3 which is a Hunters dream stick, ticking all boxes.

back to read the rest of the thread. looking forward to hearing about the lovely 308

I lived in Southern Saskatchewan for almost 11 years. I took up bow hunting in only the last two hunting seasons there, but was only successful with the bow, for various annoying reasons when I first moved to Alberta and got myself sorted out equipment wise.

But my humble Remington 788 in 308 topped with a Leupold Vari X III brought down perhaps thirty white tailed deer. I think I only had two woundings in those days. The rest were bang-flops.

The .308 Winchester is far from forgotten, just overshadowed in some forums and media, by the
latest hot loads or big-ass metric chambering's. I've owned numerous .308's and had fine results,
both on the range & in the field. It's a great all round cartridge that's also affordable to load in
quantity.

That said, I still have more fun, and have gotten most of my game with old-time rimmed cartridges.

Both my father and i use 308's for moose, deer, bear, caribou and anything else we can get in our sights. i'm going to be getting rid of my'n pretty soon though......why!?!?! you may ask. we'll see i wasn't that smart when choosing the particular gun that i bought. i ended up buying a cheapy remington 770 and i really dislike it. the metal is cheap and i guess when it's fired the metal expands and for some reason the bolt doesn't want to slide back. and when it does, you have to pull on it very hard making the bolt slide out of the gun altogether because the bolt locking mechanism always moves after every shot. anyway enough with my rant about my piece of crap. i just hope none of you were as cheap/stupid as i was. i'll be lucky to get 200$ for it and thats only if i tricked someone into buying it. maybe i'll donate it to the local opp so they can melt it down or something. god knows it would be better if it were made into tire rims or something. later

Had this problem with a 770. The stock is pretty crappy and soft. The action screws need to be cut a bit (don't remember which one) after that the bolt will be a heck of a lot smoother. Damn that thing is pretty accurate too. Popped a magpie at 150yds off of the saskatchewan rifle rest.

I still use it and have for many years, so have a few others in our hunt camp.theres no reason to reinvent the wheel for something thats worked for decades very efficiently.
