.308 win.. The forgotten hunting calibre??

Not arguing with you at all, but I'd want something heavier for Bison.
One friend, a taxidermist has killed every Western Canadian horned and antlered big game animal except Bison with his 308 Winchester...

I watched a ted nugent hunting video awhile back and one well placed arrow took his bison down it blew my mind, but I have always said its all about shot placement!

Without a doubt shot placement is the most important factor.
My late Brother was an avid Bison hunter and I remember him telling us how he shot his first Bison, a large Bull with his 460 Weatherby.
Not a long shot perhaps a hundred yards however the bull fell down at the shot and then got back on its feet and continued grazing for several seconds before toppling again.
When the animal was being dressed they found that the 500 gr. bullet had cut off the top half of the heart.

That buff acted like a perp on PCP!:p
Here's a bison nuked by a .458 Quackenbush airgun.....neat stuff.

Nice bullet performance WL! Regardless of what you name the cartridge, bullets that measure .30 caliber, weigh 150 grs, and impact at 2700 fps have been effectively killing big game for more than a century on all the world's continents having big game worth hunting. Nothing magical there, just a time proven balance of size, mass, and velocity made even better with today's high quality bullets.

Amen, After dabbling with a 300 Short mag, I find the 308 to be exactly that, size, mass, case capacity an velocity to be all i'll ever need!!

My last 3 Yukon moose have been taken with my .308. 150grn Speer Hotcores probably flying around 2750fps. Nothing magic but it feels like a near perfect balance of calibre bullet and velocity.

.308 just works. Best all around caliber ever imo.

More often than not a boring old hammer is the right tool for the job.

Love my 308....its a 5r milspec, and was the best shooting gun out of the box ive ever purchased. I had a used one, then liked it so much i bought another one, after bedding and putting a timney elite in it, its a 1/2moa gun any day of the week. It will always be my go to rifle whenever im setting up (bit heavy to pack for a long distance, and certainly not a mountain rifle), but ive killed moose, elk, many deer, antelope and a pile of black bears with it up to 700yds. 308 will always be one of the greats in my opinion. Love my 300WM's, but unless your really stretching it out there, they dont do a single thing the old .308 wont.

BINGO ......

This is exactly why I'm a HUGE .308 fan.

Far too many are over gunnin' these days for no real reason.

If I had to go with only one calibre ever .... .308.

I've loved firing all the .308s I've ever shot. Last year I though I needed a 300 Win Mag for hunting. I took 3 deers under 100 yards, instinctive shooting more than anything else, had they been elk or moose it wouldn't have made a difference at that distance, even with a .308. I'm going back to .308 for hunting. Already using it for target shooting with very good results. Best all around rifle round IMO.

I am with Rocklobster. The .300 Savage is an awesome design, coming out in 1920 or so, and gives nothing up to the Winchester, upon which it is based. And yet, no love for the Savage. Kinda sad that everyone flocks to the newest this or that....

I love the .308...... And all cartridges based on the .308 case..... Only exception being the .338 federal, and that's only because I think the .338 win mag is the better cartridge........ But I also enjoy the .375 H&H, so the .338 win just works.....
