.308 win.. The forgotten hunting calibre??

I have been noticing a mass exodus to the Magnum corral. Doe anyone still use the .308 win for hunting anymore? It seems as of late that the only time the .308 comes up it is strictly for target long range, tactical, enforcement, etc.. I can remember my Grandfather's Savage Model 99 .308 hanging up on his gunrack in the house. Its the only calibre he swore by. Harvested everything from whitetail to Moose. Anyone else with thoughts on the .308?

All the moose in our hunting group were killed with the 308 with two exceptions a 338 win and 7x57(me) JITC

My Dad just got a new 308, he plans on using it for moose in the fall, up till now he's been a 270 guy.

I currently use a 30-06 for everything. Previous to that I used a .243 for deer and a 30-30 Lever gun for Moose.

Ive got a Ruger M77 (tang saftey) in 308 and wont ever get rid of it. Its my favourite rifle by far.

I don't think you have to worry about the future of the .308 in hunting camps.

We have 3 308 savage's in our camp. We have used them for everthing from grouse to moose.

I use a M88 in .308 for hunting. And it's a very accurate gun much more accurate then I am. I will never sell that gun either.

A .308 is a quiet cartridge that does not kick up a lot of fuss not does it kick you from
under your hat . It just quietly goes about it's buisiness killing critters at reasonable ranges.

One of my favourite hunting rifles was a Winchester 88 in .308, very accurate, easy to carry and always did the job

Haven't you heard for some reason animals now have genitically changed and anything less than a magnum cartridge is not enough gun. So some here tend to think this. I have and use a 308 and have nothing bad to say about it. For years and years more moose were shot with 30-30's and 303's and still are. I love my 308 and if I could only have one gun well the 308 would be a contender

I'm planning on using one on an antelop hunt this fall. Loaded with 155 amax should take care of them up to 5-600 yards.

I've shot dozens of deer and a moose with my .308. I've been using my .243 exclusively for deer the last few years, but I'm thinking of using the 08 this year just because I like my cz 550 and want to use it. I actually feel the 08 to be a bit much for deer, which is why I have been using my .243 so much.
Now and then I'll have a long shot on a windy day at a quartering away deer and wish I had the 08 as it has power to spare. .308 is a fantastic and versatile cartridge.

Winchester 100 in .308 and a Savage model 11GL in .308 are what I use on deer and Moose.

I've taken a lot of deer with my Ruger 77 hbar .308. I love the calibre, the accuracy, and IMHO when loaded right, it'll take anything in north america.

Sheesh!! The reason so many have moved over to the "dark side" [Magnums] is because game animals have evolved into armor plated, mutants that simply will not die if shot with anything less than a 338 sooper magnum. Reading much literature aimed at the hunter seems to reinforce this thinking, and I cannot imagine why. I have hunted for over 50 years, and while I do own a couple of magnums, they have actually travelled very few miles in comparison to regular chamberings. The 6mm Remington, 6.5x55, 270 Winchester 7x57, 300 Savage, 308 Winchester, 30-06, 303 British and 8x57 have all worked just fine at ranges that varied from practically point blank out to 500+ yards.
I cannot imagine hunting thin-skinned NA game and feeling undergunned with a 308 Winchester. Regards, Eagleye.

I've brought home more big game, including my biggest moose, with a 308, than with all my other calibers combined. It's a great cartridge and it isn't going anywhere.

I have been using the 08 case for 2 years now....stuffing 225gr 35 caliber bullets in them creates one of the most efficient (mind boggling) cartridges (the 358 win).

The secret is the case...the 308 (most popular in the family) will be around for a long long time.
