.308 win.. The forgotten hunting calibre??

I guess! Not anything better by a long shot unless its a big mother that smacks you around a lot and costs mucho dineros to shoot. In the pleasant recoil range too so women can shoot it easily too. I expect you would be hard pressed to find anyone in this site that didnt have a 308/30-06etc, 12ga and a 22. Pretty much covers the hunting map. Bison and griss -I would load the 30-06 up with 220gr tho or mebbe take something bigger. Different game when something big might just decide to put you on the menu.

The .308 is a capable cartridge, and suitable for use on virtually all of North American big game, but I don't own one and probably won't. It just lacks KOOL.;)

Not that long ago I would argue that my 7mm Rem Mag was the way to go, now my favourite caliber is the 6.5X55. But I do own more gun's in .308 then any other caliber. Win 88, Model 742 and Model 760 Carbine. I also just put a down payment on a Savage 10 PC. I love to shoot the .308 Now if I could find extra cash for a BLR and a Win Model 100 in .308 :D

Geographical Distribution

Based on discussions with my father (Who has extensive hunting experience in Ontario, and has recently moved to Alberta) I am under the impression that there is a difference in Cartridges (and actions) based on the hunter's location in Canada.
In Ontario he used .308 primarily (in Pump, Lever or Semi-auto)
(They are at a MAX shooting ~200yds)
While it seems in Alberta the Magnums (270wm, 300wm, 300wsm In Bolt) are used primarily (Here your distance to shoot is limited to your ability/Cartridge)
I personally am interested in purchasing a .308, but it will be likely be bought after a 300wsm...
I am sure that .308 is a FANTASTIC cartridge, but I do think that there is a big 'cultural' difference based on your location...
Has anyone else noticed this difference based on location?

Haven't you heard for some reason animals now have genitically changed and anything less than a magnum cartridge is not enough gun. So some here tend to think this. I have and use a 308 and have nothing bad to say about it. For years and years more moose were shot with 30-30's and 303's and still are. I love my 308 and if I could only have one gun well the 308 would be a contender

I 100% agree with this statement!

Anyone else with thoughts on the .308?

The .308 is probably more popular than you think. With the proliferation of M14s and everything tactical, I'd say that the .308 is getting taken out to the field more and more. Eventually the ninja-tacticool newb crowd takes their "sniper" or tacticool rifle out hunting (for the first year anyway ;) ). Later on when they figure that a hunting type rifle may be just the ticket for taking hunting, they are already familiar with(and probably reloading for) the cartridge.

I like the .308 for it's ability to shrug off high volume shooting, while still feeling like a real rifle. As a hunting rifle, I find less to like. It will deliver the same energy at 350yards as a 30-30 takes to 100. Yawn.

Which is still more then lethal for any game critter in North America...
Besides which not everyone hunts on the prairies. :p

They are good. Surprisingly I have never owned one that was a really good shooter.

I Use a 165g Hornady Interlock for deer and bear.

The end.

While I have started using a 300WM for much of my hunting, I still have five rifles chambered for 7.62/308win. Ammo is cheap and readily available, recoil is very easy to deal with, and meat damage is not that severe. I have started using the 300WM more due to elk and moose hunting but I tended to use the 300 on some of my deer hunts just to continue to familiarize myself with the rifle.

Now since there are two threads on the merits of the .308 watch them flood into the EE over the next few weeks for sale. :D

Well, actually I've got a Remington 788 in .308 I was thinking of parting with....:D Not thinking too hard though.

Took a 48" moose this fall with it at 175 yrds, no arguements on the terminal end. Now have a 7mm-08 on the way in the mail, so thinking the .308 is gonna end up being a permanent safe gun......
