308 win vs 338 fed

sheesh, i dunno, a rimmed 338 for a #1 would be awesome, i been just pipe dreaming about the ruger 1 303 i have, 312 :p an wishin it was a 338 fed, but it seems the differene is SFA...
true?

If you go heavy enough to slow your impacts below 2200fps at the ranges you’re hunting, you’ll actually lose on game effectiveness compared to your current .303 chambering. A single shot .303 in particular I’d argue won’t see any benefit going to .338 or bigger.

Neck that 303 to 416 and lay the smack down

It’d more than likely result in less impressive kills on game below their buffalo, not more. ;) Admittedly WhelanLad has been known to hunt those buffalo.

In the century since the metallic cartridge (first major innovation) and smokeless powder (second major innovation) were introduced, steadily firearms have been moving to ever sleeker, smaller and faster projectiles. That progress hasn’t been for fashion alone.

Personally, I think 338 fed is a cool round, but a niche round. I think 308 is very vanilla, but more versatile. I have a 308 and with proper bullet selection and shot placement, I don’t think there’s anything on the continent it couldn’t take down. A 180 grain accubond out of a 308 can put a lot of hurtin on whatever it hits. And all the talk about lower velocity and avoiding meat damage, since you handload you could always just do slightly reduced loads with 308, H4895 is your friend.

Plus, bullet selection for 30 cal is just amazing (light varmint bullets, light pointy, light round / flat nose, medium pointy, medium round / flat nose, heavyish pointy, heavyish round nose, heavy pointy, heavy round nose). The options of bullet / load combinations for 30 cal might be the most out of all the calibers.

If you want just a 338 fed, go for it! I just don’t see it doing much a 308 can’t. Like one poster said, load a 308 with 180’s and tell yourself it’s a 338 with 200’s! And since you’re talking about 30-60 yard shots (that’s where I take most of my game) I don’t think any animal could tell the difference. And as mentioned, either will still let you reach across openings out to 300 pretty comfortably.

jjohnwm : But today, finding myself running out of that kind of curiosity, I glance at the numbers and know that if I had a .338Fed I would be wondering why I hadn't just gotten another .358Win instead. It's tough for me to imagine a circumstance where I wouldn't prefer the .358.

Because the 338 Fed Can do everything Much BETTER then the obsolete 358 Win can ! Thats the Bottom line ! :stirthepot2: RJ

If you say so. The way I see it, this comparison is just like almost all the other ones that are fought over, argued, debated and beaten to death on CGN...which is to say that the difference between the two, in terms of actual, real-world effect on game animals, is almost non-existent.

I prefer .358 over .338...Chevy over Ford...dogs over cats...Marlin over Winchester...the Stones over the Beatles...H&H over Gatehouse...baitcasting over spinning...black powder over Pyrodex...boxers over briefs...sourdough over rye...SFP over FFP...stick over automatic...recoil-operated over gas-operated...####-on-opening over ####-on-closing...and revolvers over semis...all for the best possible reason: just because! :)
