.308 Win vs. 7.62 x 51

Hey guys,

I'm planning on buying a Remington 700P LTR TWS in .308 Win. I'm wondering if its ok to shoot 7.62 x 51 rounds in this .308 Win rifle?

I've heard mixed things, search the boards and didn't find much, search Google and found some horror stories but others saying that its fine.

So, what's the deal? I just want to plink and surplus 7.62 x 51 would be nie and cheap and its FJM.

Any help is appreciated.

My surplus 7.62 is some of the most accurate ammo that I shoot in my Savage Scout. I can regularly clang the 300 yd turkey with it at the local range. I was quite surprised, but it works.
Maybe it's a little negligent on my part, but I didn't research it before doing so.
 
No problem at all shooting 7.72 nato in a civilian .308 chamber.

The problem, if there is one at all, is that civilian .308 can sometimes go overpressure when fired in a military chamber.
 
Before there was such a thing as the Internet, .308Win and 7.62NATO were the same thing. Lots of shooters, myself included, used commercial factory ammo with no ill effects. Commercial factory ammo does run a bit hotter though.
"...surplus 7.62 x 51..." It'll do if you can find any at a reasonable price. Ordering from internet sites will cost you shipping. Shipping costs are determined by the weight and size of the container. Shipping ammo across the country will negate the 'cheap' part. It's not made for great accuracy either. You'll want to make sure your local range allows FMJ's too. A lot of 'em don't.
 
I scored some surpluss ammo, suposedly from milarm. It comes in 140rd battle packs, I think ctm is the only thing that indicates a brand or something with headstam of 88, 12. But the great thing is the bullets are copper jacketed, and not steel clad like the port stuff. I wouldn't fire steel clad ammo in something you expect to shoot acurately.

Your rifle was likely built in the Remington Custom Shop for shooting Across the Course in the US and chambered to shoot Lake City match ammo. Does it have a stripper clip slot and an internal 5 round mag? My orginal 40X barrel was also stamped 7.62 NATO. It has been rebarreled twice since then.

Yes you can shoot 7.62NATO in a .308. Surplus ammo in not very accurate. Handloading is the way to go to squeeze the best potential, accuracy wise out of your rifle. Getting into reloading is cheaper and easier then you think.
This does come up every few weeks in the reloading forum and ammo forum. Flip back a few pages to see the whole story, it does get entertaining:D
