165 grain bullets with Varget or either of the 4895 powders. IMR 4350 may be a bit too slow for the 308, it will probably work but you may not get the velocities you are looking for.

Target, or hunting bullets? Any particular weight range that you prefer? Do you have any bullets on hand, or do you have any particular bullet preference?

Every powder you list except for Rx-19 and IMR-4350 are good for most of the standard range of bullet weights (the -19 and 4350 are OK for very heavy bullets).

He needs to be able to shoot enough rounds, accurately enough, to make up for being stuck with me as partner in the WSS shoot on the 11th of July ;) 40-60 targets in 10 minutes between the both of us, up to 200y. Accuracy needs to be good enough to bust clays up to 200y.

On our family property I can shoot out to about 600 yards give or take a 100. Most of the shooting will be for sh*ts and giggles. I was wondering what weight of bullet can the 1-12" handle. I bought this barrel because it was the right price.

I see people talking about 155 gr palma and scenars and amax. Can the 1-12 twist handle these types of bullets or not.

I am primarily a hunter who just recently find myself dipping my toes in target shooting. Have any suggestions.

thank-you

A 1-12 twist is a very common twist for 155's.... some prefer a little slower 1-13, but 1-12 is just fine.

My personal recipe is 155 berger vld's with 42gr of varget (I shoot with a 1-12). My rifle also likes sierra hpbt match 155's.

If you don't have much Varget, I would go for the 4064.... It is very similar to Varget and a lot of people prefer it as it doesn't vary as much from batch to batch.

Yes earlier today was at Cabala's and wholesale sports in Winnipeg and neither of them had Varget. They are the only places locally that sell reloading supplies.

When Winchester brought out the 308, I think one in twelve was the standard twist. 180 grain bullets were probably the most common for it.

IMR4895 has always produced good accuarcy and excellent velocity out of my 20" barreled .308's. In my experience a 1-12" twist will stabalize any of the traditional match bullets up to 185gr.

748 works well with all weights, from 130 grain to 180 grain. I used to use it with 135gn in Hunter Bench Rest shooting and still use it with 155gn Palma Match in My AIA and CZ rifles with very good results. The Remington 700 used in HBR had a 1-15 twist and worked fine with 155gn Hornady boat tail match bullets. It wouldn't stabilise anything heavier.

Your 1-12" twist 20" barrel will likely be able to stabilize bullets as long as the Sierra 190 Matchking (I know that they work in a 26" 1-12" barrel).

For shooting out to 600 yards, any quality accurate bullet is good, either hunting or match.

Your barrel will definitely handle the 155 grain target bullets (and also the 168 and 175s too). Some of these target bullets are super-high-performance (extra low drag, so that they get blown around by the wind less), and they can be more fussy to get a good load. These "good-but-fussy" bullets include the Lapua 155 and the Berger 155 VLD. The Hornady "Amax" series are also very high performance low drag bullets, but I don't know whether or not they are fussy.

The "modest performance" target bullets (Sierra 155, 168, 175) are quite easy to get to shoot very very well.

What bullets do you have, or can you get easily?

Wear ear plugs under your muffs. That puppy is going to bark!

The 3031 and 4895s amd 4064 are all real good 308 powders.

The Sierra match bullets are not fussy. I have had excellent groups form hordady 165 gr boat tail soft point. They are cheaper than match bullets.

The Hornady "Amax" series are also very high performance low drag bullets, but I don't know whether or not they are fussy.

It's still early days for me in my switch from Sierra MK 155's to the Amax 155's, but so far they seem to be working out quite well. I've just been seating them to the same depth as the SMK's, and they're shooting quite well. Not fussy as far as I can see.

"...one in twelve was the standard twist..." One in 10, same as the .30-06.

not quite- depends on the manufacturer- there's a list at the back of the speer manual
1/10 colt, jc higgins 51-L, mannlicher- schoenauer, marlin, musketeer, remington 722. 740. 742, 780, 700, 40xb, 788, 660, and 600, shultz & larsen, ruger 77
1/12 browning, fn, h&r 300, 308, husqvarna, mossberg, savage 99, 110, 2400( i know the savage 99 comes in 2 twists depending on the age) sako, stevens 110, winchester 70,88, 100, 670, and 770-
that was current as of 1991- whether there's been a standardization across the board since then- incidentally, the same situation exists for the '06 but with only 2 manufacturers- husky and browning 78

according to greenhill , the 180 needs a twist of 1/13.4 to stabilize- so the 1/12 is perfectly fine- however, when you go above 180, you end up with the bullet sitting in the powder if you keep the magazine length- and all i've ever used is 180s for everything except the BIG bears- i hunt the east slopes of the rockies on horseback, use a savage 99, and have since about 75- typically using a remmy core-locked or a speer grand slam
