.308 Winchester Suggestions?

That is a factory Grade 3 Tikka Hunter. They sold them in Canada a few years ago. Originally 2k and only in 308win. Northpro had them for 1600 so I grabbed one. It’s a good shooter that one.

Cool, well nice looking rifle for sure.

To the OP - I think a model 7 or short action remington 700 or tikka would be hard to beat in a 308 package. I have a 308 in a model seven and it has become one of my favorite hunting rifles when calling moose.

Of COURSE it is - I BET it out SHOOTs that Remmy ! :p RJ

Possibly.

Tikka has expanded their plastics manufacturing from bolt shrouds, bottom plastics and magazines. Now into toilet seats too. Nechako has them in stock RJ.

My first choice would be a 700 but only if I planned to build on it. If I planned to use the rifle as is, there are a half dozen good choices; European and American.

The Tikksas i have had were all shooters. One of my closest hunting buddies has been using a Battue in 30-06 for about 10 years now or more than I can remember and it has a fair few moose on it. Mine were 308, 6.5x55, 7mm-08. They are solid, trouble free and accurate rifles.

My experiences with Howa/Vanguard have been very good as well. They're a solid under $1000 choice.

Any of those cartridges will take moose with aplomb if you hit them well. 308 is just fine.

When shot with 300 WM, 30-06, 308 or 9.3x62, from what I have seen they all pretty much react the same. If its not a CNS hit, they run a lil ways and fall down. Results were practically indistinguishable, one between the other, and a follow up shot was often made, because there was time. The ones I've seen shot have a tendency to slouch around a bit and not light full afterburners like a deer that just got shot.

Very limited sample size, cause I've only been around the fellow a few times when he killed, a 270 Weatherby seems to really put a hurt on them.

My dad's answer is to shrug and say "guns a gun". He uses a 303 Brit, fwiw. But he doesn't take very long shots either.

For under a $1000 for target shooting, I think I would look at Howa or Weatherby, definitely better than A Savage in my opinion, I think there are some heavy barrel options and they are already a heavy rifle. Lots of other good options mentioned for a hunting rifle but for an economical target rifle pretty hard to beat Howa/Weattherby.

Despite the hate for Savage rifles, at least you can swap barrels and gunsmiths will work on them. They have good heavy weigh barrels available and the triggers are decent as is the stock (make sure you get a model with Accustock). The new Accustocks on the 110's are adjustable - no need to buy a custom stock to reduce length of pull.

You can afford better optics with the money you save. I have used/good condition Nikon FX1000 6-24x50IR scopes on my 110's in 6.5 and .224v. I will admit - the 10TR receiver screws might not be perfectly aligned with the bore (if I believe my bore sighter). I am switching out the rail with a Leupold 1 piece base/standard medium rings that will allow me to compensate for this.

I have a nice Savage 99 in 308 - kicks like a mule with 150gr moderate loads compared to the 20" 10TR. I picked it up several years ago on the EE since my Dad used to hunt with one. Buy something heavy if you want to use it for target shooting.
