.308 with a 1:12 twist

Is the 1:12 twist in a .308win designed for light bullets? I'm wondering how it'd work with a 165gr AB or TSX?

The TSX's work great for me out of 1:10,and the 1:12 308's i have .I load 130gr.TSX's up to the 165gr.TSX.
Hornady Amax also work great out of both rifles 110gr.-180gr.

My wife's '06 has a 1:12 twist barrel and it shoots 180 gr TSX's very well, and those are what I load for her bear loads. I tried it with 200 gr X's but that didn't work out so well, neither did it like 240 gr Woodleighs very much (they began to yaw badly at 50 yards) although at very short range I believe these would be a superior to the 180 gr TSX for bear work.

My .308 had a 1:12 barrel before I changed it, and it even did OK with 200 gr MK's. For hunting applications, stick with 180 gr or lighter bullets in your .308 and they will work fine.

On the Shilen barrel web site they say up to 170gr. with a 1/12 twist.

my nifty little chart says you're good to go with 180's up to a 13.4 twist, therefore your 1/12 is fine- where you run into trouble with the 308 is when you get above 180, seating for the 308 mag length, you start seating the bullet IN THE POWDER- or when you get to 190 grains, the chart says 11.5
