For some reason I thought of this one today. I can't remember ever reading any reference to an improved version of a 308. I assume it has attained perfection. More likely it was tried and there was no discernible increase that would warrant the extra expense.

There is such thing as a .308 Ackley Improved, however its a relatively small change for a .308 Win.

Ackley Improving consists of reducing the case body taper as much as you dare (the .308 already has relatively little taper, compared to the .30-06, 6.5x55, .303 Brit, etc). And then increasing the shoulder angle to 40 degrees (which is a bit steeper than the factory .308 Win, but not a whole heck of a lot).

You gain a few grains of case capacity, but that's about it.

The "Improved" 308 is called 30-06....

A modest improvement requiring a longer action.
