Hey everyone,
I've only been shooting for about 4 years now, and I've just got my new .308Win. I was at the range, (125 meter), and noticed that at 50m site in to 100m there is a significant difference on paper. I was also using a laser light sight in, and then followed up with some shots.. I was also doing this with my .303 Lee Enfield. These 2 rifles can seem intimidating and i'm having trouble getting some accurate, consistant shooting... and I'm wondering if anyone knows the trajectory or any tricks on shooting these more powerful rifles...

Depending on your specific load, both rifles should produce a trajectory that roughly approximates a 50 yd zero, 2" high at 100 yards and zero at 200 and 10" low at 300 yards. Trajectory though has little to do with good marksmanship. The more recoil a rifle produces (the .308 and .303 are both quite manageable) the more important it is to have a stock that fits the shooter, proper eye relief to the rear sight or scope, and a firm hold of the rifle when firing. Learn how to use a shooting sling. Dry fire as much as possible when off range, keeping to the BRASS principles; breath, relax, aim slack squeeze. This means that you breath between shots, you relax prior to firing, aim - your scope should be in focus for you and if shooting irons concentrate on the front sight, not the rear sight or the target, slack - take up the slack of the two stage military trigger, and squeeze - when you are ready to break the shot press the trigger. When you are dry firing pay special attention to what the sights cover when the shot breaks. What the sights cover is where the bullet will go. Perhaps the most important first step is to learn how to assume a natural point of aim and how to check it. If you are on target, close your eyes and let all of your muscles go limp. Open your eyes and if your sight has swung off target your position needs adjustment. Make small changes to your position and recheck.
