I'm thinking of buying some drill rod stock to make a 30mm lapping bar.
I made one for 1" a few months ago and ended up using it a couple of times already.
If anyone in the YEG area interested in splitting the cost please PM me.
I'd have to buy a 3' piece so we could make 3-4 of them. I'm expecting cost to be something like $20-$40 each.

Thanks for reading

Hi dadonkey, you might want to look at some 30mm thomson shafting also. Might be a little less expensive. The thomson shafting is 60rc (you can also buy "soft" be sure of what your buying) and precision ground finish.

Thanks for the tips.

sm: I haven't found a local source of 30mm shafts; it sounds ideal though because of the tight tolerances

guntech: I do prefer a harder steel because I want to wear metal off the rings, not the lapping bar

We used to get our lapping bars from Plenty "O" Patches however they stopped selling them a couple of years ago. We did what you are suggesting and ordered some round bar stock from the Metal Warehouse in Edmonton and then cut them to length and drilled and tapped them for handles that we had from older bars. This has worked out very well for us. Phil.

I ended up buying the Wheeler 633266 kit because I couldn't find any 30mm bars, shaft or anything here in Edmonton.
I like building my own tools but it just wasn't worth it.
