30mm LAV casings. .50 bmg casing price check?

Is there any sort of market for 30mm casings? Other than the odd colllector. And also what does .50bmg IVI brass go for these days?

Well if we want to be really specific....

Firstly the items can not be sold except for scrap under government regulation. They can not be used for reloading or the dealer who purchased the material can be fined rather heavily. If someone took them off the ranges and decides to sell them....then that is an offense as well, particularly if you are employed by DND.

We seem to have problems these days with people taking stuff from the CF and trying to sell it. Not saying you are but you might want to take that into account in your decision to sell stuff.

If you have any questions on what is legal or not, drop me a PM. I can point you in the right direction.

If you're talking about the current armoured vehicle, the LAV III, it's 25mm. And it's not something anybody's going to reload, given that the brontosaurus is no longer with us.

So a military surplus store should not be selling such. "lav" casings.

I guess the question is not who is selling them...but how you got them. 50 cal can be reloaded. Surplus brass sold as scrap by the CF can not be used or sold in the released form. It is required to be demil'd. If a surplus store purchases bulk scrap brass from the CF, they can not sell it as 25mm or 50 cal brass or whatever nature they got as brass. That the regulations. It can be sold as scrap metal but not as once fired brass.

You would be surprised what some people reload! The point is the scrap can not be resold as once fired brass. It is required to be demil'd.

If the individual "acquired" the items himself from the base for example and seeks to sell them, that is another issue as well. If he works for DND then he has some explaining to do.

I have no live rounds or empty cases in my possession, sir. Lying when stating that is a chargeable offense.
The CF doesn't release empty cases(or live ammo) of any kind for sale to anybody but scrap dealers. Fiscally irresponsible if you ask me. Not that NDHQ does.

Sorry to hijack but what about live ammo? I still have lots of DND marked 22LR bricks in my possession. I bought them almost 20 years from an army surplus.

Lots of IVI ammo sold in the US a few years back... Maybe never DND property. But who is going to be able to tell the difference between surplus DND brass and IVI brass sold in the USA??

Good question.

While I understand that selling the "scrap" brass and/or reloading it are against the law, does anybody really check? Is this like spitting on the sidewalk? Lastly, why does anybody care what happens to the brass?

Mark,

We have some people that ethically don't have issues with laws, as long as it suits them or what they want. We have people who steal ammunition from the CF and sell it for profit. We have people who steal issue equipment and sell it for profit.

If someone is using the brass, likely not an issue since it would be likely unable to prosecute. That being said, buying the scrap then selling it as once fired is against the regulations and the sales agreement. I guess if someone puts profit ahead of laws, agreements or the like...not much we can do, you are right.

What I do have a very big issue is people stealing CF stuff, selling it and defending their position with a shrug saying "what's the big deal". When current issue ammunition is being sold, people stealing brass to sell...I guess I have a really big issue with it.

Any brass, ammo or the like with 2000 or latter dates, you can bet it is illegally sold. The reason....we have no surplused ammunition, nor was brass allowed to be sold as once fired. Before that, there were mistakes or exceptions....but not current issue and currently not recent issue stuff.

So, the point goes back to an individual seeking to sell 50 cal IVI brass for profit....how was it obtained?

Try the date stamp on the ammo....that is how you figure it out. There were three lots in the late 80s and early 90s. Nothing since then. Just because it happened in the past, does not give protection to current issue ammo/brass.

Morpheus,
I know you dont make the rules, so I'm not challenging you...

As I see it, if a person steals ammo, etc, yes he should be shot and pissed on, but why can't the CF see clear to sell once fired brass on the open market?
It would be a much better use of TAXPAYER paid for product.

The USA recently went through this very issue, with the result being that such sales are now protected by law.

I am fine with hanging these people, I despise thieves. I am more wondering why the CF cares about the brass after disposal. Seems ridiculous to care what happens to it if it is sold as scrap.

As a taxpayer, I would rather see the CF profit from selling surplus material then just destroying it... After all, the policy of destroying everything instead of selling it to surplus stores is driving the prices up and encourageing stealing. Brass, for exemple, is not reloaded by the CF, so why not sell it as once fired brass and make more money then selling it as scrap metal? Why are police forces not allowed to sell used guns to civilian dealers anymore? Just stupid politics...

same reason the CF can not donate extra food following exercises or training. Someone decided to try to sue the CF. In the end, we don't allow food except as waste for compose. It is likely the same....liability...

Yeah, I can see that.
I taught a welding class a while back and one of the women in my class had a BF with an ex-UK Army Land Rover. He said that the Brits would move their Land Rovers around the world to various hotspots. Near the end of their life, they would go to BATUS British Army Training Unit Suffield, in Alberta. From there, they got sold off to the public. Up until someone #####ed and screwed it up. Now the vehicles just get turned into targets.

I know your not looking for a legal lesson so ill keep it short, Like Morpheus32 was saying, fairly bad idea to be talking about about 25mm brass and 50 cal IVI brass, alone someone might not think anything. But i know every other army guy like me was like...hmm i forsee an investigation in the near future...

I know theres a few exotic rifles that do fire an necked down 25mm round, with a 2,500gr projectile. But the amount of trouble one could get in, and the extremly slim chance of kinding someone who shoots one of these thats looking for brass is by far not worth it.

IVI 50BMG brass is everywhere, were the people get it from i dont care, its not my problem. Ive seen it anywhere from $2.00-$4.50/casing

I bought 65 pieces for $70.00 shipped a few weeks ago. All IVI, half regular, half match.

On a side note i've also been hearing IVI is going to start producing the army's 338 lapua ammo, im curious to see how that shoots.
