I own a couple TC Icons, and one of them are a 30TC. I am curious if the 30TC caliber would be good for moose, either the 150gr or 165. Max range would be no more than 200yards(any more would just mean more work). Yes I know shot placement is key so I'm not looking for those comments, nor am I looking for comments telling me what other caliber to use. Just a simple yes/no answer. I've emailed Hornady about this and also putting it up here in the mean time. Thanks!

More than capable. I killed my biggest moose with a .300 savage @ 250 yds. The .30TC has a lot more juice. Just
make sure the BULLET you shoot is up to the task. Avoid s.s.t's and use a good bullet.

Well that all depends on if TC achieved their goal of creating a .308 size cartridge with .30-06 performance.

With that out of the way, apparently it would be a cartridge sufficient for moose at short/moderate ranges. Bullet choice would of course be a factor.

As you stated, if you have an excuse for getting a new rifle - who am I to stop you :)

There is no reason it wont work. To me two things kill effectively, first one is shot placement as you already said and other one more important than calibre selection is bullet selection.
Strong constructed bullet,Hornady GMX, Barnes would be great on those distances and such...
Dont overkil trying to use 180's or so...165 is perfect for mid range .30 cals.

Most of people i know or hunting with are eager .300win mag clan.
Even 300WSM is not enough for them.
My uncle killed biggest moose than any of them with .308W. On about 200 or so meters.
Caliber is not so important, of course if you are not using .22 or .24,s as bullet selection is.

Thanks for all the replies, Hornady got back to me and said that at 200yrds that the round wouldn't have a problem taking a moose. They recommended using a GMX bullet instead of a SST

For sure it will work, many many many have been taken with far less. I know of a guy that lives out in the boons that uses his 22-250, all he's got and they seem to be deathly allergic to it. It's funny reading old stories of guys like Clayton Mack hunting Grizzlies and moose on the west coast here when they refer to their 30-30's as there big guns.

It would work just as well as a 308win would, and the 308win has killed lots of moose

Sure it will. Why not?
Any of the cartridges in the 30 TC, 300 Savage, 308 Win, 30-06 Sprng range are excellent for moose with a well constructed bullet (core-lokt is fine) placed in the killing triangle.
Many moose have been killed with the 30-30 Win which pack less punch.
We still have a picture of gramps taken on an old logging road not far from Elk Lake, Ontario with a huge bull moose taken with a Winchester 92 in 44-40 back in the early 1940s.
