I've read accounts of people loading .310 bullets meant for the 7.62x39 in their M1 Garands. Just wondering if anyone on here has ever given it a shot? Not saying it's something I'm going to try, but I am curious.

Whats the dia. of a .310 bullet ?
Whats the dia. of a 30:06 ?

Do guys shoot 45-70 rounds from single shot 410's?
Yes, but it certainly isnt the smartest thing to try...
Curious, search you tube for the ones who try this.

Yes. I know the diameter of each. That's why I was surprised that people did it.

Hundreds of guys on here do it. The extra pressure from that 0.002 inches is nothing compared to the increase you'd get from switching to a solid copper bullet.

No. Definitely jacketed bullets. I shoot cast and routinely oversize. But a cast bullet will swage down nicely. They were using Hornady .310 123 gr bullets.

Yep. 123 grain SST in a 308. Just make sure you've got the throat for it. I've got one rifle they won't feed in. Well, they will, but there's noticeable resistance, so no-go with that one.

What about risk of not having room for the case neck to expand? I may not be phrasing that correctly, but I tried a .310 in a piece of fired brass from my Garand. The inside case neck on the fired brass was definitely tighter than the .310 bullet.

That's.my concern. In a bolt gun no biggie. But in a Garand there may be risk of an out of battery firing if it doesn't chamber.

Will it plunk into the chamber ok though?

The mini 30 is a semi. And the first two years of its production was with .308 barrels (and firing a .310 7.62x39)

But every gun might be different. If it won't plunk, I wouldn't do it.

Why put the M1 Garand under so much pressure and stress and take a chance of doing damage to these old warhorses.

I remember reading the British NRA banned tight bore .308 rifles in competition because the chamber pressure was exceeding proof pressure test rounds.

Personally, I don't think there would be any issues concerning pressure whatsoever. My big concern would be getting enough pressure for consistent accuracy/ejection/feeding.

There is a very slim chance that "steel core" bullets will cause some issues but I doubt that as well.

Just use some common sense when loading and find a spot where the three bugaboos of accuracy/feeding/ejection are consistent.

Ed makes a good point though. It's certainly not what the Garand was "designed" for. There are cheaper, less iconic 308 bore rifles to monkey around with. That said, it's your property, and you can do as you please.

How cheap are you getting your pull downs? If your just plinking and want .308 diameter you could go with 110 gr?... $0.16 each is pretty reasonable... https://www.budgetshootersupply.ca/product/berrys-30m1-carbine-308-110gr-rn-bullet-100bag/

I just had a bunch of hornady 123 gr kicking around. And yes it's true. A Garand is probably far too awesome to take the chance.
