I have an old 1894 Winchester made in 1907 in 32-40 and want to find ammo for it. I am going to be at the High Prairie, Ab Gun show looking for it if you know of anyone near there or Grande Prairie, Ab...

I also am curious if it would do much good against a black bear for spring hunting? and what kind of range can expect out of it?

As for the gun info (for those who are much more knowledgable than I) it is a leaver action with tubular 6 shot magazine and it has a 26" barrel (as per the guy who verified it for registration and its S/N is 4637##

I inherited it from my father who has never actually shot it which is the primary reason for my search of this ammo...

Good luck with finding that ammo, if you do, it will probably be pretty expensive to shoot.

I have to reload for my old 32-40, but its better that way anyhow, getting the old lead out!
 
Just run anneal 30-30 shells and run them into a 32-40 die to make the shells. I used to shoot a 32-40 a moderate amount and never had any problem making shells for it.

32-40 along with the 38-55 were originaly black powder rounds, and the model 94 barrels for these were not made with winchesters special smokeless steel. A steady diet of hot loads with jacketed bullets is not good for the bores, even if the action can handle the pressure. The 94 barrels for the 30-30, 32 spl and the 25-35 were made from the smokless steel and don't have this problem.
