.32 rim fire and the law

Hello!

As I do not own a antique firearm I have a question about using a .32 rim fire rifle. Would it be legal and/or possible to discharge a modern cartridge instead of the .32 rim fire in a Stevens tip-up rifle like the one seen for sale at p & s guns and militaria?

Could you make an adapter or insert legally?

There are two separate issues involved; one is technical ie can the gun be modified, will the rifling twist stabilize the bullet and how does the bore dimensions compare to the caliber you want to use and is the gun strong enough for your intended use. I would suggest "Single Shot Rifles" by Frank de Haas for strength, slug the bore and compare with intended caliber for diameter, the greenhill formula (150 diam squared/ twist = max length) for maximum bullet length.
Many .32 rimfires are antiques (made before 1898) and changing to a centerfire would make them modern and they would then require registration. You can make/have made shells from solid stock and prime them with ramset shells and continue to shoot the gun as a rimfire and not change its antique status.
