325 Winchester on a Mauser?

Why not?

Anyone here have a 325 built on a Mauser? Thinking that an 8X57 rifle with a near perfect barrel, but a messed up chamber :bangHead:, could perhaps be cleaned up with a 325 WSM reamer.

For those who think feeding might be an issue, I have a friend who has a 375 Ruger that feeds like a fat boy at a buffet in his FN Mauser custom.

Over the years I have owned a couple of 98 Mausers that had the military barrels rechambered to 323 Hollis, which is the 308 Norma Magnum necked up to 8mm. Also have seen a couple done on the 338 Win, and one on the 300 Win case. Both Hollis rifles worked quite well, and were more than accurate enough for hunting.

Wondering about a Bubba'd VZ24 being done up with the 325 as well.

It will be all about the choosen gunsmith. I know who I would approach but he has an aversion the short, fat magnums.

Edited to add.
Looking at the drawings, I don't think the wsm reamer will clean up the X57 chamber without settingthe barrel back.

Not yet. :)

My biggest concern is the diameter of the chamber (0.557") will not leave much barrel diameter (0.984") in the chamber reinforce area. That's only a bit more than 2/10ths of an inch around the chamber walls.

A stress analysis by a professional here indicates there would be no problem with 65,00 psi factory ammo. However, we all know that reloaders routinely venture beyond that level, and the rifle may not always be in my possesion.

The answer, of course, would be to remove and destroy the barrel before if it were to move to a new home.

How about an 8X68 Ted? I'm just doing one on a Husqvarna right now.........8X68 imp 30 deg........or you could just sell me the VZ and be done with all those pesky problems.

Hey wait a minute, aren't you the guy that accused me of looking for a Salvage rifle in 375 Imposter? You should GIVE me the VZ just to make up for the slight and starting that ugly rumor.

Overall length of factory ammo is 87.00 mm (3.425 in), so easily doable.

Will be dark in two hours. I'm heading out to do some ice-fishing fishing for burbot. Will be twilight when we get the holes drilled. Poor man's lobster for dinner tomorrow. :)

Just got back home, caught 13, released 4 small ones, the nine are all cleaned and ready for the pot. Going to be a feast here tomorrow. That's tonight actually, 15 hours from now. :)

It is tough living in the North! Good night.....
