I would APPRECIATE any insites on the new .325 WSM versus .338 for a moose grizzly weapon..

advertising suggests .325 WSM shoots flatter than 300 win mag and hits harder than a .338 out to 3oo yards..

can premium 30 cal bullets be reloaded into this caliber/??

anyone have one??

Thank you

Steven Rupp

The 325 WSM is 8mm, so no, 30 calibre bullets would be a no no! I like the WSMs, but the 338 has the advantage of being able to hurl larger calibre, heavier bullets. I wouldn't trade my 338 for a 325 WSM, there are a lot more bullet choices for the 338.

.325 or .338?

Throw the 8MM Rem Mag into the mix!Faster and Flatter than the .338 or .325Wissum.My moose load is a 220gr Swift A-Frame at about 3000fps!I like it better than either of the above, plus not everyone has one. There's lots of hi-grade 8mm bullets around, from 180-220gr.!Cheers,Mur

I'll see you your 8MM and raise you the 338/378. 210TSX at 3450 fps and 250 Noslers at 3100 with no pressure. Actually the 325 does make sence in a BLR or Mod. 7 or Kimber. Just not for me.

The 325 WSM is a cool cartridge and certainly doesn't lack power, and I'd own one if I didnt already have a 7mmRM, a 30-06., 300WSM, and a 375 Ruger on the way!

However, I'm a rifle loonie, and you are more of a hunting loonie!!

For your purposes- Which is to up your power level over a 270 for larger/scratchy game- the 338 Winchester makes the most sense.

There is a HUGE selection of factory ammo, both premium and standard, as well as a HUGE selection of 338 bullets for handloading, brass is readily available etc. In short, feeding your rifle will be much more simple.

You can use heavier bullets with the 338, which will increase your "stopping power" more than using a ligther bullet that is faster.

There have been reports that the WSM cases don't feed as well in some rifles as narrower cartridges, which is more of a rifle issue in my opinion, but some guys have had trouble, although I've not experienced it wiht my 300WSM or any others that I have tried. You *may* be able to get an extra round int he 338 magazine, too.

Finally, I think the only large company that is currently chambering 325 WSM is Browning, and I know you (and I) are no a fan. Kimber is
chambering them and by all reports they are excellent rifles.

If it was me, I'd look for a 338 Winchester in a Ruger or Winchster rifle if you ca find a Winchester.

I would take the 338 Win Mag over the 325 WSM any day of the week. Less feeding issues, better ammo selection/availability, larger frontal diameter, and greater rifle selection (basically everything Gatehouse already mentioned.).

HOWEVER, I personally think you should run your 270 Win and 140gr TSX... take the saved $ and spend it on your Stone's hunt this year.

I ran a 35 Whelen (basically a 338 Win Mag) for a while on some very goodly sized blackies, moose and deer with no exceptionally different results over my 280/7-08 AI's.

Neither the 338 nor the 270 Win are fight stoppers... so take the one you know inside and out!

For my Grizz draw this year I'll be packing my 280AI or 7-08AI w/140gr TSX's (and I'll have a RickF's 358 Norma in the cabinet w/250gr North Forks all spring collecting dust).

HMMM I thinkI will be shootinga Rueger 7mm rem mag with 165 or so Nosler partitions loaded up...my hunting partners "spare " rifle its stainless steel and composite stock and I have used it before on a moose when my rifle malfunctioned (its since been wonderully fixed by Rick @ Alberta Tactical )

Steven

We can load up some 160 Partitions or 150 TSX's for your .270 or you can buy that Browning BLR in .325 wsm that Al has in his shop. (That is one nice-handling rifle!) :D

325 or 338

Steven; I have and exstremely accurate 338WM in a M700 with a douglas barrel and it has it's throat opened up, it shoots 225gr. partitions at 2950fps, and i know a friend shot 220gr. from a 325WSM and it was only getting 2675 fps, factory federal ammo, so he tried reloads and got it up to 2770fps, I think the 338 is superior, but not alot (180fps) so bullet selection is the biggest factor for the 338WM.

Regards
John.

The 325 wsm offers performance that is virtually identical to the 338-06. That is not damning it with faint praise as the former wildcat is a great cartridge.

The 325 wsm , while a good cartridge, is not a 338 Win Mag which will always produce higher velocity and more energy especially with bullets over 200 grains in weight. The question of if that extra bit of power is really needed will always be good for discussion around the campfires. ;)
