.325 wsm?

I was reading that post on the new Federal cartridge coming out and it got me to thinking has anyone heard how the .325 wsm is coming along. I thought for sure that one of the new wsm's to come out would have been a .338 wsm.

You would of thought they would have gone to 338, certainly better bullet selection and S.D and B.C. but i guess they have the 338WM and did'nt want to chamber it in the WSM series.

The 338 wsm, while a great wildcat, does not come close to producing the velocity of the 338 Win Mag. As we all know velocity sells and Winchester dropped the 338 idea and went to the 8mm - .325" - version in order to produce the velocity figures that "we" gun owners "expect" from a magnum.

By tweaking the factory figures with select bullet weights Winchester can now advertise the 325 wsm produces results similar to the 338 Win Mag. In truth however the 325 wsm offers nearly identical performance to the 338-06.That however is not damning it with faint praise as the 338-06 is one hell of a good all-round cartridge. That performance in a short action action rifle has me seriously thinking about the round.

Well I think the .325WSM is a little more versatile at low end bullet weights "Elk and Under"... whereas the .338WM cleans up at the high end bullet weights for Bears and even African Game.
I believe Boddington said it best when he said that the .325WSM can still be marketed as a deer rifle....;)
 
There was a series of articles about why not the 338 WSM by god hinself (Dave Scovill) inthe Rifle/Handloader magazines over the last 6 mths or so. They are right above, the case capacity just didn't generate the velocites they wanted.
 
It looks like the market for a nowhere near magnum velocity 338 short action is here so why build one in a magnum. I'm sure their spies seen it coming. Besides, there's still the 338 A-Square.
 
The 200 Accubond at 325 WSM velocities will be a killing item, you may be sure. Given the general suspicion of 8mm rounds in North America, however, it is hard to say whether it will fly or not. FWIW, I like the 8mm bullet diameter, and have an 8mm Mauser in a Remington 700 Classic that I would not give up for anything. I got the opportunity to test the effectiveness of that Accubond in my 8x57 this fall, on a moose at around 250 meters. Bang-Flop! He never stepped out of his tracks, and the bullet was not recovered. The 325 should be just a bit more of the same. Regards, Eagleye.
 
If they can get the speeds out of the 325 with 220gr bullets then it will prove to be a great round, it will hinge on this weight since the 300 WSM can already match the speeds with the lighter bullets and they have higher SD and BC's.

Browning are now offering their BLR's and A-bolts in .325 WSM. I've gotta have one. As mentioned, you can't hunt whitetails without one, right booner... ;)
 
Well I Would Like To Invite Anyone Who Has A 325 Wsm In A Model 70, And Thinks Poorly Of It To Send Me An Email, I Just May Want To Buy That Off Of U. I Have Been Looking Around Where I Live And There Appears To Be A Shortage At Present. I Prefer To Buy From Individuals Than Retail...for Obvious Reasons.

well as far as I know, nobody in Canada has 325 WSM ammo yet? although Im sure its possible if you have 325 dies, to make ammo using necked up 300wsm brass

I think Eagleye's post has really put the case of the 325WSM in the cold light of day.
It's always going to be compared to the 8x57, which also has struggled against the general dislike of 8mm in America and is quite capable and cheaper to feed, and the 338 Win Mag, which it trails behind by about 200fps at best.
I guess the point I'm making is that with the heavy stuff that's supposed to put it in a class above the 300WSM it isn't all that astounding.
With deer sized bullets then fine, it a much flatter round than the 8mm Mauser, but with moose style pills, well, not so great.
Federal have done their homework without a doubt.
People have wanted a short action 338 for a while.
Matched with the right bullet it could become a top performer.
What really needs to happen is for Hornady to produce a 8x57 Light Magnum.
Say a 180gn at 2750fps.........;)
