338-06 A Square LOVE

i have a custom rem 700 that i will never part with.easy to load for, not fussy about bullet type and hits like a sledge hammer. recoil is mild as well compared to 338's.
 
The .338-06 was a great cartridge long before Art Alphin slapped his name on it. It will continue to be a great cartridge now that the A-Square company is nothing but a bad memory.

It - the .338-06 - is a great big animal bullet as a heavy bullet at modest velocities penetrates like a son of a #####. Most 338-06 rifles will toss a 225 grain bullet at similar velocities that the parent cartridge will propel a 180 grain bullet. With bullets of 225 grains and under it gives up very little to the 338 Win Mag. Even then a 250 grain 338 bullet at ~2550 fps out of a 338-06 is nothing to look down on.

My personal "all critter" load for the 338-06 is a 210 grain TTSX @ 2800+ fps. Hits like a hammer and is very capable to reach out to the far side of 350 yards in practiced hands.
 
i have always hunted with 200 grn nozler ballistic silver tip at 2800 fps. down to less than two boxes as there discontinued. only recovered one bullet as all the others exited from deer and bear.
 
I loved my weatherby ultralight. Sadly I sold it and by the time I had a chance to buy it back I had other rifles that did the same thing. If I was starting all over, I would have a 338-06 forsure and build it as light as I could, the bee was 6 1/4lbs and it was about perfect in my opinion.

Same for me. Ron Smith barrel that likes everything that goes down the pipe! There are certainly a few different "do-all" calibers for North American hunting, IMO this one ranks near the top.

My go-to hunting load is 210gr Partitions with 60gr of H414 and magnum primers, which shows ~2720fps.
 
I'm a fan currently don't have one but I will have another someday until then I'm using a 21H in 8x57 as a substitute
 
Im still split between the 338/06 and the 35 whelen. I started a 338fed project but things are on pause right now for the time being. That said the 338/06 is a great cartridge
 
Ron Smith barrel on a Sako AV action shooting 225 accubonds has worked great for me. Hard hitting and recoil is mild. Its one of my favorites
 
It's unfortunate no mainstream ammunition company reloads it that I know of. As a non-reloader (too many hobbies/activities already) I will probably opt for a 338 Federal, 35 Whelen, or 358 Winchester instead.
 
I also had a Weatherby Ultralight and loved it. Fit was great and weight was great to pack, but as time goes on other things seemed more needing of the funds. I only took 2 animals with it, and each one it put down with authority.
 
I liked the 338-06 I built for myself... shot very well and lots of smack... but it did not kill a moose any better than my 7mm-08 did. I did feel better carrying the big gun in big bear country though.
 
Built a 338-06 on a left handed Rem 700 almost 20 years ago when my shoulder issues were keeping me from having fun with the 338 Win Mag.
It has a 22" King barrel, with NECG open sights and is bedded in a Wenig nutmeg laminated stock. Has a Leupold VX-3 3.5-10x40 B&C scope mounted in it Leupold QR rings and bases.
Will shoot its pet load of 215 gr SGK's over 62.0 gr of H414 with WLR primers in Wby brass at 2751 fps and produces 1/2" groups at 100 yards. Works very well on big game!
The Wby factory load with the 210 gr Partition also does 2750 fps out of my rifle and also prints 1/2" groups.
Have yet to try the 225 gr AccuBond in this rifle, but will soon.
My rifle is on the heavy side, but the recoil is definitely mild, with the LimbSaver pad, even off the bench.
This was going to Africa with me in 2018, but unfortunately life got in the way and the trip had to be cancelled. 4 spiral horns were on the menu for that hunt, including eland.
