Hi There: I am new to this site and am wondering if there is anyone out there that loads and shoots 338-06? I'm in the process of having my Savage CL110 converted. I would like to talk to someone who loads to find out a good place to start.

H4350, IMR 4350, IMR 4064, Reloder 15,and W760 are all powders I have used with great success.

The Hornady 225 grain SP has proven to be the best bullet I have used with teh 200 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip a close second.
 
PS the 338-06 is a cartridge, not a caliber :)

I think a 210 Triple Shock @ 2700ish f/s would be tough to beat for a hunting load
 
I might try the 160 grain TTSX in my 338 Federal. it should crowd 3000 f/s..not bad :) should penetrate as deep as a 210 gr Partition too which has a good reputation as a big game bullet in the 338s

I got a few ;) 30-06's already. Most won't take a 165 to 3100 feet per second.

In truth the desire is just an excuse to tinker with some more loads. Besides that the 165 TSX in the 338-06 would be one hell of a caribou load up in the Itcha Mountains where the grizzly bears outnumber humans. :cool:

Hornady light magnum rounds do.
 
the 30-06 is boring. that's why you don't get a 30-06, the only thing it has ever been useful for is a basis for several wildcats.

turtle, where are you getting that rifle done. I have done one savage already, and was thinking a 338-06/6.5-06 switchbarrel setup for myself.

Have you ever run those over a chronograph??


I have on several occasions and I will say Hornady is VERY optimistic on their claimed velocities. Most are 100 - 150 below the stated speeds when shot in sporting rifles with standard length barrels. In fact with today's powders I can produce hand-loads in a modern 30-06 sporter that usually beat the real-world velocity of the Hornady offerings.

Also, actually shooting a rifle at different ranges will prove to be an eye-opener for the guys who quote ballistic tables out of books and magazines as gospel. ;)


BTW Tod, have you guys seen any of the new TTSX bullets yet??

Isn't that the truth. ;) I was delighted to find that my Rem Classic .35 Whelen, when sighted 3" high at 100 would still place it's 250's in a tidy little group about 2" high at 200. I did not expect this.

Never tried them. Best my '06 does with IMR4350 and 180's is 2800fps. With165's closer to 2900fps in a 22" barrel.

Anybody know how Hornaday gets these so called "improved" speeds with their powder?
