I got the chance to put some rounds through Amphibious's custom 338-06 today. Boy, what a rifle! :D Very accurate, and recoil wasnt too bad. Incredible ballistics considering powder burned. Great rig. Two Bartell thumbs

was in vanderhoof today to try out some loads with the great "Todbartell". this trip was special, as unlike most of my trips to vanderhoof I stayed sober, and could actually remember the trip :D

working on loads around the Hornady 225gr Innerbond and Hornady 250gr Spire Point. I had been having some consistancy issues with my home scale (it won;t hold a zero) and my groups were suffering. so off to "Tod's" house and for some time on his RCBS ChargeMaster, hoping to keep the consistancy up.

the load I had worked up in PG was a Hornady Interbond @ 3.38", 61.0 grs. H4350. thos was shooting poorly with groups ending up in the 1.8" - 2" range. I thought it was my shooting, but after shooting a .6" group with my .22-250 minutes later I put that to rest.

with Mr. Bartell at the trigger and ammo loaded on his scale it went something like this:

not to shabby! 2677 fps six shot average with .85" & .66" 3 shot groups @100m.

after trying a few more power combos we moved on to the 250gr IL's. again, same load I had tried in PG with poor results was dramatically improved with the consistancy of an accurate reloading equipment.

250 gr. - Hornady Interlock @ 3.33", 59.0 grs H4350 ~ 2539 fps (.82" 3 shot 100m)

Why the .338-06 makes sense:

Hornady Interbond @ 3.38", 61.0 grs. H4350 ~ 2677 fps

3580ft.lbs of Muzzle Energy and still packs a whopping 2160 ft.lbs @ 300yrds. all this from a .30-06 case. if you take a peak at the hornady manual you may also note this load is 100fps slower then a .338win mag (with the same bullet) using 10grs less powder. gotta love that!

the 250gr SP @ 2539fps:

M.E: 3578ft.lbs
300yrds: 2135ft.lbs

Look carefully at the pic he just posted. I won't tell the whole story, but it was a "What Have You Learned" moment.

Personally, I'd have kept my mouth shut about it and tried to blame bartell:D

I see a scratch on the top of the grip that doesn't seem to be in the original picture. Time to confess.......what happened?
 
I think Phib is just getting started on a bit of Canadiana folk art. He's going to carve a bull moose with a grouse in a pine tree as a background on the wrist. Then he'll fire up the dremel and finish off with some engraving...
 
haha, big gust of wind blew it right off the bags when I was out at the range last week. got a few dings.

mother nature is a real ##### sometimes :p
 
Ah, the amazing tod bartell....

Has hot avatars, makes good ammunition, and is at testign rifles via bench shooting.........

What more could you ask for in an internet legend?:p :cool:

Run the numbers using the 225 Nosler Accubond with its's super high BC of .550 @ ~2700 fps and one see the cartridge is also capable of pretty decent long-range work. Sited in for a 10" diameter vital zone the Accubond gives a 350 yard point-blank range. Started at 2700 fps the bullet hits 500 yards still packing very close to a ton on energy!


Another bullet you may want to try is the 200 grain Silver Ballistic Tips - a heavy jacket bullet suitable for animals as large as elk. (The regular 200 gr BT is no longer in production) I have shot 2 deer with the 200 BT , one at 75 yards and the other close to 300 using my 338-06 and both had "eat-up-to-the-hole" entry and exit wounds.
 
Very good numbers with H-4350,your long boxed M-700 really comes into it own.I can't get anywhere near that with my FN.I have to go a little faster powder.
 
I'm building my very own 338-06 and was curious about barrel lengths. When I get ahold of Ted G. to build one for me, I am considering something at least 26". Will this be awkward, or do I have room for a little bit more?
Project so far- win m70 action -post 64 (s/n says 1974) in a Boyd's laminate stock. It will also be sporting a bipod. Heavy rifle's really don't bother me to much.
Any criticism welcome-that's why I signed up here.
