Hi looking at getting a 338/06 imp. built .Does anyone have any experience with one of these? I just sold a custom338 federal was wondering if a guy would be happyer with the 06 or should just build a 338 win? tks robin

I had a 338-06 Ackley Improved, to tell the honest truth, with 225grn bullets, there was absolutely no difference in velocity over the 338-06.

I had another bbl chambered in something called the 338 Jordan. It had a body with a one degree taper and a shoulder blown out to one caliber neck length. Very accurate but it recoiled as bad as the 338 Win Mag and delivered almost identical velocities with 225grn bullets.

I found the Improved and the Jordan unacceptable, the improved because it really wasn't an improvement and was very fussy, the Jordan because it recoiled as hard as the Win Mag, which was what I was trying to get away from in the first place. bearhunter

I had a 338/06....Worked well...meat and potatoes sort of stuff (put the meat beside the potatoes).....I got bored with it and sold it.

Adding 100 fps (best case scenario) to the performance of the 338/06 wouldn't hurt anything, but at some point the bigger case is just simpler to go with.

Several years ago I saw some tests done with the 35 Whelan, the Whelan improved, and the Brown-Whelan improved (shoulder blown out and moved forward). While some performance gains were shown even the Brown-Whelan was still a long way off of the 358 Norma in velocity...I suspect the same would be true for the 338 bore.

Hope that helps.

Good Luck!

Sorry for the repeat post bearhunter...Your post is about 3 minutes ahead of mine!

I had a short neck 338-06 Imp. Awsome round, very near Win. Mag. speeds with 5 down. I'd highly recommend it. That said I'm back to a standard 338. My 338 is basically a featherweight so the only gain with the 06 is more mag capacity.

I had the 338-06 Imp that MTM had, it had the shoulder pushed forward a little, but not quite as big as a 340 Gibbs.

I've also had a std 338-06 and several 338 WM's

With top loads and 225 grain bullets, the 338-06 will do 2700, the 338-06 improved (with the short neck) would do 2800, and the 338 WM will break 2900.

I would not bother with a 338-06 improved (or any AI) again.

My 338-06 with a 24" barrel and long Weatherby-type throat can safely get 2750fps with a 225 Hornady SP. The 338-06 improved adds very little to the "standard " version.

I've had a 338 Gibbs for 35+ yr. It is an Enfiel 17 barrelled by Al Pedersen in the'70's. I had to go dig up my notes and data as I only have 1 load in boxes. Apparantly several loads shot well but I settled on is 225 gr. Hornady's @2850 fps. I don't recall any issues with primer pocket expansion, cases are probably annealled but not sure. One fellow who is in our moose camp has a 338 Win. in a Model 70. I load for him, but only a few rd. a yr. My notes show 2950 for the Horn. 225 interbond. So, it would seem that a 338/06 has a small vel. increase over the 338 federal, the imp over the std/06, and the mag over the imp. To each their own. Remember recoil has nothing to do with case capacity but rather bullet weight and muzzle velocity, if all else is the same. Mark

338/06

My main reason for the 338/06 imp is something a little smaller than my 375 H&H imp and 416 rem but bigger than my 30/06 imp.as you can tell I'm partial to the imp cartridge.I can't see the sense in building a standard caliber when you can imp them. That being said if I ever had to own one caliber it would be a 338 win. tks robin

338-06 imp

Hi

I have one for the past 10 years now and I use it for my main rifle now due to the weight of it. Currently using hornady 200gr interlocks with a 2975 fps ave.( my chrono) with it using imr 4320 62g. Also tested hornady 250 sp with imr 4350 powder(65g but have to check on that) and velocity was around that 2650fps. I find it really easy to shoot for recoil and reloading is also easy. I made it on a remington 721action with a douglas barrel and a wolfe stock and the gun and scope weigh in at 7lbs. Nice weight to carry aound when walking all day.

Even if an improved 338-06 gained nothing in velocity over the regular version, it's worth while. I found the case on my 338-06 was a wee bit too small to use the 4350 powders. If you could get the same velocity with less pressure, this is a good thing.

Tks for info.I figure what I'll get built I just got a new mod 70 stain classic in 270 win,25'' Gailerd or pacnor,I've got a mcmillian fiberglass stock ,get those new pillers & bedding that coralaynes has & trigger job, talley light weight & leupold 2.5-8 boone & crocket.I'll probaly go with a contor 2 or 3 stainless barrel & get it fluted.maybe get the action trued .Should be a nice rig.tks robin
