338-06 or 35 whelan

both are great, but with your .300 mag and your .308 you have the spectrum pretty well covered already. You don't really need the slight added versatility of the lighter bullets offered for the .338-06, might as well go for the heavier bullets offered in the Whelen.

OK I wasn't aware that .338 bullets were offered as heavy as the .35. In that case the only real difference is the availability of factory loads in the .35 Whelen.

neither round is at its best with the heavies.I've always found the 338/06 with the 225gr and the 35 helen with the 250gr seem to be the best compromise of velocity and smack

Anything the 35 Whelen will do the 338-06 will do slightly better. :nest:

It shoots same-weight bullets with better ballistic coefficients and higher sectional densities at similar - or slightly faster - velocities than the Whelen.

The only benefit the .35 Whelen has over the 338-06 is that one can buy ammunition for it over the counter while the 338-06 is a hand-loaders proposition for the most part.

I have a 35 Whelen AI and I love it, for the vs. 338 debate I have that covered too, I have a 338 RUM so I have the best of both worlds and my RUM will out perform your 338-06.

Personally I like the 338-06, just because I have an affinity for the .338 caliber. That being said, I have a respect for the .35 Whelen due to the history and traditional appeal. So I would say, if it is stainless, synthetic and lite go 338-06. It you are looking to build a bluer steel, wood stock item go Whelen. I would guarantee the animal will not care.
Or you could just be plain cool and build a .338-284 on a Winchester Model 70 SA and call it a day.

It would be difficult to find a better Elk/Moose round than either of these.Out to 300yds they are fantastic rounds. The 35's are my favorite calibers, but some love the the 338's, really no difference on game.

Thanks for the replies. To silverback. How will your 338rum perform at 30 feet against the chest of a grizzly?.I mean no disrespect I'd love a rifle in that chamber but theyre Just to fast for me and my style of hunting. I like heavier slow bullets. Hence 45-70 double and prolly the 35whelen as a back up and for that really far 150 yard shot. These will be close range thick brush hunting guns and will be battered and bruised. I'd love a beautiful 375hh double but I don't have enough non essential organs to sell on the black market to buy even a used one so for me its cheap functional guns. Yes they're ugly but if I run outta bullets I won't hesitate to use the gun as a club and go primitive on my prey. Thanks again for all the comments but I think it will be the 35 whelen I have made

If you are not going to buy a pre-chambered barrel consider a 35 Whelen AI. It costs no more to build than a regular Whelen, Redding supplies reasonably priced dies and fireforming brass is a breeze. You end up with something just a little bit different with a little bit of an edge, at really no extra cost. Food for thought.

a 338 rum with any bullet weight at 30 feet is going to knock any grizzly on the planet right into outer space. and it wont matter what the bullet does when it hits. period.

And it happens to be one of the most useless AI cartridges ever created. If loaded to exact pressures the AI version of a 35 Whelen will give you a 25 fps increase over the original. Alot of work for nothing.

You should really do a better job of conforming to my opinions before going and doing something like that. In the end, it would make you look smarter and intentionally raise my regard for you. ;)

That is a very nice looking Ruger BTW.
