.338-06 Performance?

I have an old beater Mauser 98 sporter that I bought to build a custom rifle on. I am thinking of re-barrellling it to .338-06 and would like to know what to realistically expect from this cartridge with a 24" barrel. Best bullet weights? Velocities? Accuracy?

I shot Nosler 200 gr Accu-bonds at 2800 + with good accuracy . This is a very nice caliber that will do for all of North America and most of Africa. Manageable recoil and hard hitting.
 
I have thought long and hard about this caliber. May eventually get one done up, but in the short term I'm gonna buy one of the new 338 marlin express just cuz I like the levers.
 
My Sako m75 Greywolf 338-06 AI shoots 225gr Accubonds and TTSX's. Dont know the velocities but estimated to be close to 2800 ft/s.

Love the caliber. As for recoil, my Tikka T3 LS 270WSM with 140gr Accubond reloads has more "FELT RECOIL" than my 338-06AI.
 
Mine with a 24" barrel gets 2740 fps with a 225 Hornady SP; 2800+ with a Nosler 200 Ballistic Tip; 2600 with 250 Trophy Bonded Bear claw; 3250 fps with the 160 grain Barnes TTSX. The accuracy of the King barrel is great with all bullet weights.
 
I've only tried 200gr Hornady SP's in my .338-06, but the 23" PacNor barrel clocks them at over 2700fps. Still have a bunch of 160 Barnes TTSX, 225gr Hornady Interlocs and 225gr Nosler Accubonds to test drive.
 
My cooper JGR .338-06 seems to be very easy to load for. Still working on loads but I had good sucess with 200gr noslers and imr 4350, and 225gr nosler with rl15. I've got some 210 tsx to try and 200gr nosler E tips. I think that 210tsx should be ideal bullet for the case. 250's are probably ok but I have a .338win mag for the heavy bullets.
 
225 hornady ib with imr 4350 24 inch barrel rem 700 2700+. not too far behind the 338 win. haven't got my new 338 06 out to check yet.

i would like to post pics as guntec did a great job but i'm tecnicaly challenged. beyond emailing pics i'm lost. specs are 23 douglas xx ss barrel, trued 700 action with a quik klip and a b&c medalion stock. weighs 6lb 10oz with talley lightweights mounted. about a lb lighter than my last one.

Mine with a 24" sporter-weight barrel tips the scales at 8 pounds even with a 13 oz scope and 7 oz steel rings and bases. (The bare rifle is 6 lb-12oz)

It WILL catch your attention shooting 250 grain bullets off the bench! ;)

i just mounted a vx11 with butler creek covers on my 338 06. total weight of the package is 7lb 9oz. i'm happy as my last one was too heavy. recoil aside i prefer lighter rifles.
 
Here is my eye candy...Sako m75 Greywolf 338-06 Ackley Improved. PacNor supermatch grade stainless #5 barrel cut to 24", fluted, powdercoated. Leupold VX3 3.5-10x40 Gunmetal Grey scope with Alumina Flip-up covers to go on, mounted on Sako Optilock Ringmounts. Weighs in at 9.63 pounds.
