338-06 vs. 30-06 Recoil?

If I did not have so many 30-06 and 338's a custom 338-06 would be my choice. Then I would only have one goto rifle instead of 4!

Recoil is a function of conservation of momentum. The gun recoiling will have the same momentum (i.e mass*velocity) as the bullet accelerated to a given velocity plus the mass of powder accelerated to some average velocity. In terms of subjective felt recoil, a gun/ammunition combination with a higher recoil peak velocity will tend to feel more unpleasant than one with a lower recoil velocity given the same free recoil energy.
