338-06: Why is it not popular?

Buy a .30-06 you like, drop $130-$200 to have it rechambered and viola!

Really? Huh. I always thought you needed a .338 bore for a .338. And here all I needed to do is run a .338-06 reamer in a .308 barrel. :slap:

I am hoping your just a young man working on learning. What you would need to do is buy a 30-06 and have a pro rebore the rifle to .338. But not all steels are created equal, so pros won't touch certain barrels, and the people that do this in Canada are very few and far between (I can only think of Ron Smith).
You can end up with a good barrel this way.

The custom run of Rugers is a far better idea. Something in the African line would look really good.

Or a stainless laminate with open sights.

I should probably read before I post. I had it in my head he was talking about a AI job (.30-06 to .30-06 AI). I'll insert my foot into my mouth now.

Steve Holborn in Warren, Ontario will rebore an 06 to .338 if you want. He did a .35 whelen and a .358 Norma for me. Cut rifling. I'm happy.

After using a .338-06 in South Africa this year, a new rifle in that caliber is my next project. Here is my Blesbuck shot at over 200M, a one shot one kill. It dropped like a stone. The PH was mighty impressed!

Very nice and a great trophy!

An 7 mm STW with a muzzle brake. See, that wasn't very hard.:p You could swap "Ultra mag" in for STW if you want.

You may have something here.

Not sure about the .243 recoil, but if it does, there must be a nasty blast area going on between you and the muzzle brake. 100db reduction please.

338-06 isn't popular because there's no need to improve the 30-06. The only thing I have against the cartridge is the fact that it's a long action, which is easily solved with purchasing a 308 and using premium hunting bullets.

Yup, that long action is such a big deal  When you're stepping over grizzly sh!t in the dark spruce timber hunting moose & elk around here, it's comforting to have a .338 in your mitts.

I've started using my .35 Whelen for guiding recently. I like the authority of the .375 for grizzly but get tired of lugging such a heavy gun all day. The Whelen works well when guiding for moose & black bear. I'm not trying to knock down a running antelope at 400 yards though! Seems like the .338-06 is just another one of those good cartridges that get very little recognition or commercial promotion.
