Just finished reading the latest article in Shooting Times covering the release of Federal's very first cartridge...the .338 Federal. Its basically the Wildcat .338-08 or .338-308 in new packaging. I've never used the original Wildcats, but have to say the article got me interested!

I think it would make an ideal Black Bear and Moose cartridge, especially for hunting Newfoundland, where shots are often under 100 yards. Anyone use the Wildcat?

What do you guys think about this newbie? Lots of bullet choices and should perform well with cast bullets as well. Have to say I like this one a lot better than the .325 WSM! Opinions?:D

Yeah, but I included stuff about Newfoundland, so that makes it more interesting, plus my title was catchier!:D

So basically then, it's a .358 Winchester, using bullets with slightly better BC for a given weight, but slightly worse expansion ratio and an inability to shoot all those tres cheap pistol bullets?

But!!!!

It gives them a new marketing tool, and those who want to pretend it's something new, an excuse to purchase a new firearm!

Just to stir the pot a little bit more, AFAIK, Federal's first cartridge of their own was the 9mm Federal, a rimmed version of the 9mm Parabellum/Luger/9x19 that was meant to be used in snubbie revolvers and You guessed it, it flopped. Maybe they don't want to bring up bad memories.
