338 Federal for Grizzly?

Nice bear Ted with a big old head, solid chambering there for to boot.

He was an old bear. Got the report back from tooth sample, 21 years old. It was time...all scarred up, one eye torn up, and his lower incisor bar had been freshly broken in two. You can see this in the picture.

Now I see that my two-finger, hunt-and- peck typing also needs an edit. The rifle was a 9.3X62, not 'X63. Oh well, the cases were formed out of 30-06 brass, so they started out 63 mm long. ;)

Ted

You were just being highly accurate on the brass, old hunters don't make mistakes they just set new precedents. In 21 years he'd have seen some things, you gave him a kinder ending than nature would have shortly.

a 375, or THE 375?

Depends on the weather! Would love to but it's pretty miserable that time of year on the north coast. Perhaps I'll buy a good rust preventative.

I've always wanted to do a grizzly hunt but the only experienced grizzly hunter I know passed away a few years back. stopped putting in for draws after that not that I ever got a tag LOL
gonna go for a spring blackbear and ponder putting in for LEH on grizz this coming year.

nice pics guys, thx for sharing

1. Thanks Hoyt...

2. As a general note Grizzlies do have "ground growth", they're often startlingly bigger as you sit looking at them... Grizzlies are built quite differently. The inland bears around here are generally leaner than the black bears and quite impressively heavy boned.

3. Shame we can't sponsor non-residents on Grizzly hunts as I'd be happy to hunt with you hoyt....

4. Shawn's got a beauty bear there...

1. You are welcome...

2. I'm under no illusions when it comes to the impressive stature of grizzlies... I have sat staring at a few 550-650 pound downed black bears and I can imagine what doubling that size would do to the impressive visual impact...

3. That would be an incredible experience... I have always wanted to arrow a nice grizzly... probably a dream for most Eastern bear hunters... one that is down the list a bit and likely not to be realized... I will live the dream vicariously through your experiences.

4. Very nice bear Shawn... and a well framed photo...was really not busting your chops... just a flippant, off the cuff comment... an admirable accomplishment... good job.

Every year, while being at work in Northern BC, we have several encounters with Griz. Our Talthan bear guards are obligated to carry at least a .30-06 with a minimum of 180gr bullet weight on iron sight only.

Never a shot fired and we always felt protected by this combination. I believe a .338 Federal would do the job hunting down a grizzly out to 150 meters.

I hope I take a beautiful blonde one day, and I mean the bear as I'm married to a brunette. Thomas same drill as hunting black bears, so don't feel too concerned about trying it on your own for the first time. Muskwa-Ketchika is exceptional.

a 375, or THE 375?

I just realised I believe your signature line is caling me, or the rifle, out.

Hoyt...........here's a couple pics of the grizzly my boy (#1 son) arrowed last spring.

His little guy is "beaming," he won't ever forget when his daddy arrowed the "big bear." Probably made a lifelong bowhunter there... great job... and by extrapolation, one generation removed... great job to you also Douglas... once in a while, we are fortunate to get some stuff right. When the guy with the sickle is at the door those are the only things that will matter.

Nice mature bear there S-338, and good color phase. Looks like a northern BC or Yukon bear.......yes/no? Also appears to be a boar......yes/no?

Angus, nice bear, good head..........22-23" can't tell from side view boar or sow..........

Just noticed the note in Shawn's reply sorry, you have a good eye, fell well short of book, 22" younger boar. Looking to upgrade on the coast.
