Never even heard of the 338 Federal , now thinking I'd like one, anyone have experience with this set up.
Did very many make it into Canada. See the Adirondack had a small run of the federal but very little info on those.
Wondering if I should build one, or keep my eyes on the EE
Any other info appreciated, I've probably never shot an animal over 40yds and do a lot more packing a rifle then shooting.
Thanks

I’ve seen one Montana in 338 federal in the ee about a year ago. With iron sights it would be a very nice gun. I don’t suspect many of them are in Canada. But a wtb add will help you find one.

it would be a nice round in the montana, tad lively if fed up but if kept mild, a great bush gun!
i got a 7mm08 barrel on mine at the moment but also a 308 barrel for later! would of loved a 338 barrel

I’ve got a montana barrel in .338 federal ready to install when I’m done with my .243. I also shoot a .338 Marlin and being as they’ve got very similar velocity I expect the federal will be a handy little package in a sub 6lb bolt gun.

I have a 338 FEDERAL in a Tikka T3 SS rifle ! Its a Very good shooter - i was out today and shot some Federal Fusion 200 gr factory out in front of the Lab Radar unit and they adveraged just over 2700 fps and 3 shots several time were under a inch . My fav hand load is a Barnes 160 gr TTSX at 2950 fps and it will group 3 under 1/2 " a LOT of the time ! I know the 160 is a LIGHT 338 cal bullet but its Nice to shoot ! I have a 338-06 and a 338 Win Mag and a 338 RUM for the bigger bullets ! I LIKE the 338 FED cartridge ! jmo RJ

To much headache. Funny you say that though, I’ve been working in Queensland for the last eight years flying back and forth every 28 days. Now we are selling it all and moving down there. If I could take my guns I would but they’re staying here in case I ever move back.

I'm currently building up a Stag-10 specifically for .338 federal.
Inside 300 yards there aint a whole lot of difference between the 30-06 and the 7mm rem mag and the .338 federal. However, the .338 federal get's it done with a potentially bigger bullet, shorter barrel and less powder.
I have a deadline action built in .338 federal..... it cost a sick amount of money LOL doubt I'll ever be able to sell it but why would I want to?
can't wait for the .338 federal Stag -10 project to be done though. Getting the barrel made by Bob Jury.

The .308 will do 2,600fps with a 200gr and CFE223, and have a better ballistic coefficient and sectional density. The .338 Fed was designed to sell rifles, it’s succeeded better than I expected at doing that. Just doesn’t have the case capacity to really make a .338 work any better than a .30. In fact it’s less versatile with a smaller range of viable bullet weights. Admittedly underwhelmed by the cartridge.

Thanks for the replies, I'm always amazed at the different view points given, I'm a fan of the ttsx, will have to compare numbers of 308 168gr ttsx, and the 338 160gr ttsx, want as light as possible, no interest in debates of lightweight rifles and gym memberships,
Have a 5.3lb scoped 308, would like to be under that
Anyone know what weight savings would be with larger diameter bore in 18-20" barrel.
Hunt in heavy thick timber and always nervous tracking, after the shot, more knockdown power and larger wound channel is part of the debate also
Thanks

Dramatic? ... seriously? ... the weight difference between my Kimber Montana 84M .243 vs my Montana 84L .25-06 = less than 6 ounces.

The difference in the Montana in calibers we were discussing, a 30-06 and 308, is 8 ounces or half a pound. In a rifle people buy mainly because of its light weight, that's quite a substantial weight difference. Almost 10%.
