Pretty sure you can just resize any .308win brass then fireform and shell holder is the same also. I have almost got a couple over the years but deals fell through. I would go for it if you want it. Don't think .308 brass will be hard to find ever.

I scrolled down and saw you beat me to it. The chance of running out of .308 brass is pretty slim.

I would Shoot a G BEAR any day of the week with my 338 Fed with a 210 or 225 gr Nolser Partition at 2550 fps ! ;) RJ

that's pretty much exactly what I was thinking like I said I want something different then what most people shoot and its seems like it would be perfect for my needs most bears and moose shot where I hunt are within 75yards we hunt in thick scrub

although I didn't get a shot at a bear, I packed my Sako one spring for grizz loaded with 210gr TSX. Inside 200y it would not disappoint. I'm not into shooting bears past that distance anyways, it's not needed

I agree we have big moose here but no brown bears and I know people who have taken them with smaller bullets and good shot placement
im pretty much sold
I just haven't ever met anyone that has one and didn't know what factory offerings were available in the caliber
now ive got somewhere to start I might end up making one in the setup I want or try and hunt one down
I just think that its a nice compromise of bullet weight and power
like I said for my application
thx for all the input and im glad to see that there are some of you guys really enjoying this caliber

I've seen what grizzlies can do if they're closer and see you...I'd prefer a .375 H&H or Ruger if I were going to hunt them! But in a pinch for self defence, if I had to shoot one that was acting aggressively towards me, I'd like my chances with my warmly loaded 168 grain TTSX 30.06 rounds.

If i was going G BEAR hunting i would use my 375 H&H too - but if i was moose hunting with my 338 Fed i would NOT hesitate to harvest a G BEAR at all with this MIGHTY little cartridge ! and i would take it over the 30-06 anyday ! JMO RJ

Too much bullet for too little case. The 308 case really maxes out with .308" bullets. Start upping the projectile weight, length and diameter and the performance drops off. Monometal bullets help to an extend in this regard but due to their increased length for a given weight, even a reduced weight, this is a bit of a red herring.

Ultimately, if you want a 338 but don't want to go with a magnum then the 338-06 makes the most sense. If you want to shoot 180gr bullets then you might as well stick with the 308.

I don't doubt that you would. I also don't doubt that he'd kill you before he died, if he had any size to him at all.

We can all do remarkable things on the internet, but when you come around a beaver house and meet a grizzly face to face a rifle shrinks very quickly. And you suddenly become very polite. Ask me how I know.

So it's a glorified 30-06 without the sectional density?

I would guess a 210 grain 338 would be close to the SD of a 168 or 180 grain 30-06. I don't know about glorified, apparently the 338 fed came out in 2006? which is kind of in the shadow of the RSAUM's WSM's in 2001 other RCM in 2006 or 2007, but I guess that is more a speculative measurement.

From what I see of velocities from Isnipe or wiki it seems alright when considering capacity of the case (not that either source is the most exact), again, just an opinion.

Well i have shot 2 G Bears now i with a 7mm Rem Mag and 1 with a 25-06 Rem and they ALL died just as fast as any blackie ever did ! SO i would not ever Hestiate to shoot one with my 338 Federal ! :D But if you read on i do state its not my preferred cartridge as my 375 H&H with 300 gr ACCUBONDS is m first choice ! ;) RJ

Well, O.K., but it's a kind of a long story.

I was on the trapline with my Dad in about 1962 or '63. Spring beaver hunt was a big deal, and the 100 or 150 beaver we got every spring was usually the money that put the crop in. He had invested in 24 new Conibear traps, which were kind of a new deal then. They cost a lot.

Once we got set up, a grizzly started making the rounds at night taking beaver, traps and all. What was left of the traps, the odd time we found them, were twisted and ruined. After a half dozen or so got wrecked I decided to kill the bear, despite my Dads protests to not be stupid. One night the bear literally walked through the ashes 10' in front of our tent, and thank God didn't decide to come in. Other than a couple of single shot .22s, all we had was a .30-30. But I was young, and figured I knew what I was doing.

Hence me coming around the beaver house at 5 A.M. and meeting a bear that looked the size of a Hereford bull with a beaver in his mouth, trap and all.....and that 94 Winchester suddenly felt like a Daisy Red Ryder. I basically apologized to the bear for interrupting his breakfast, and he was kind enough to grunt, look mildly pissed off, and go the other way.

My Dad finally killed him a couple of nights later, after going home for a .30-06 and setting up an ambush over a couple of beaver carcasses. Believe me, when you meet a big grizzly at 6 or 8 paces no rifle is going to feel big enough. Yeah, I know, everything changes at a couple of hundred yards - and our next-door neighbor even killed one with a .22 WMR when it stuck its head in the cabin door - but at close quarters messing with a grizzly with a small rifle is a good way to get hurt.

I suppose my judgment may be coloured somewhat because I've been personally involved in bringing human remains in from the bush, or what was left of him, that a grizzly killed. And I've tramped through the bush at midnight looking for a Grizzly that was believed to be wounded after scalping and crunching up the shoulders of an old native fellow (who survived). I'm glad that bear was dead when we found him.
That's why I roll my eyes when I see guys saying they could kill grizzlies any day of the week with a pop gun. But go ahead, be my guest. I'm not going to be packing any more chewed up corpses out of the bush, I'll leave that to others now and just read about it in the paper. Or on the internet. That's where all the heroes seem to be nowadays.
