338 Federal

I talked to the owner of the new Tikka 338 Fed and he paid $1000 for it and took the 3x9 Leupold off his 6.5x55 and mounted it on the 338 Fed.
I saw the "groups" at 100 yds and my first impression wasn't good. As I said before ,with good handloads I expect the Tikka to group instead of patterning. Would I trade my CDL for one.....not a chance.

well you could say the 7-08 is better because it does whatever the 7x57 will, but in a more compact action rifle

it all boils down to use what you want, and your buddy will use what he wants, and I will use what I want.

BTW I think the 7x57 is a wicked cartridge! :D

It's all about having choices, and hopefully they will shoot............:shotgun:

The difference here is that Federal isn't trying to duplicate the performance of the .338 Win Mag using the .308 Win case. Winchester did try to duplicate the .338 Win Mag performance using the .300 WSM case and failed...hence, the .325 WSM instead. I personally liked the original .338-08 wildcat & the new .338 Federal looks like it has lots of promise and should make for an eminently sensible short-medium range moose cartridge.
 
I think the 338 Federal is best compared to and classed with the fantastic 358 Winchester.

The 358 Winchester is a hard hitting little power house that will readily kill anything on this continent within normal hunting ranges. In a quality bolt action rifle with a match quality barrel the 358 is nothing less than astoundingly accurate. In fact my late buddy used to love to embarrass the tactical guys with his little custom 358.

As good as the 358 is one can only assume that the 338 Federal will be better. The 338 Fed will shoot the longer (higher sectional density) 338 bullets faster and flatter than the 358 while offering the increased penetration that the longer bullet offers.

The 338 Federal will shoot accurately as long as it is housed in a quality barrel cut with a concentric chamber. A bit of free bore will not hurt accuracy (when was the last time you saw an inaccurate 300Wby?).

For what it is designed for the 338 Fed will get the job done...Even at 2 MOA.
 
Why the 338 federal? there is no way in hell you would ever catch me touching off a round from a 20" barreled 338 win mag. I think the 338 fed is the ultimate "compact rifle" round. I am in the process of building just that on a savage platform (but in 358 win, a bit bigger bullet for me thanks)
