338 Federal

Serious question for all those espousing the light 160-185 gr bullets. Why would you not just stay with the 308 Win if that was the weight you were going to use?

Ted

As I found... even 200 grain bullets are better out of the .308... once I get up to 250 grains, I am happy to use my .358's... at 225/250 grains, the case capacity vs bullet weight does not make it a long range proposition anyway... the .358 handles it nicely out to 250 yards.

Nah... no need for a .308 case cartridge between .30 cal and .35 cal.

Unless you only want 1 short action rifle. To me the 308 is boring and ive always loved the whelen so why have its lil sister. The 338 fed however interests me and seems to be a perfect match to my style hunting and provides range when needed and can be built rather light

Maybe... but I would still take a 200 grain in .308 Win over a 225 grain in .338 Fed...

What gun nut wants one short action?

I like em long and thin i guess. In all honesty the only short action .473 bolt face cartridges im liking are 250 savage. 338 fed. And 458socom. Now the 3006 family thats where its at

You'll notice Ted that they're talking copper monometals in those weights.
Higher weight retention but they need good speed to open reliably.

I am really liking the Federal Premium ammo with the 210 gr NP. Took a very nice caribou with it this fall.
Have also picked up some of the 200 gr Fusion ammor for $20/box...
Still have to try it in my rifle; a customized Winchester Model 88 with a short heavy barrel, banded front sight with Tirjicon's tritium insert and ghost ring sight on a rail. A Leupold VX-3 1.75-6 scope rides in QRW rings. Goaal is to have a full length stock made for it.
