.338 Federal

Im super tempted by the Ruger frontier stainless 338 Federal but am unsure about how I would like the scout scope setup. never gotten the chance to look through one before

TB If you dont like the forward mouted scope. You can mount it in the conventional position too. The first time I seen the frontier in a gun rag I thought the same myself.

This link talks about mounting it either place incase you wanted to know

I am also intrigued by the calibre in a nice light rifle, but I just got a Whelen and have yet to whack anything with it, so the 338 federal will have to wait.

or you could always go ............ ;)

I bought a Ruger Stainless Hawkeye in .358 Winchester and find it to be pretty nice. I need to get the stock shortened a bit for me so I'm not going to hunt with it this year. I had considered the .338 Federal but I currently own a .35 Whelen and thought it would be a good idea to only have to buy .358 bullets instead of .338s too. The rifle itself shoots nice. The only thing that I can't get used to yet is the safety on the rifle. Although it tucks away into the bolt when it's on, I find it a little bit difficult to take the safety off quickly and I'm not sure how safe it is to walk around with it in the middle position. The rifle feeds beautifully. It's neat to see the bolt face grab the rim of the cartride right out of the magazine. I've never owned a control round feed rifle before.

My 2 cents.
