338 Federal

it wont sell, but it is probably an ideal choice for 90% of hunters out in the bush hunting moose, elk, or bear

I have a 338/08 built on a Sako Finnlight and I like it. I used a 185 grain Barnes TSX this spring to take my bear and it worked fine. I am getting 2700fps with this load so its not bad. I am going to give the new 200 grain /338Accubonds a try however. I want to use heavier bullets in it but the 185 Barnes would be a good do it all choice. I just bought my 338/08 a little buddy. I picked up a .260 Remington Mountain Rifle for deer and such. I figure between the two I am pretty well covered. Time will tell I suppose but I don't see the 338 Federal really selling well unless they put it into a cheaper platform like a Tikka T3 or something along those lines.

i think it will sell, any short action is hot now. but is it any better than the 358 which is not exactly in the top 10. time will tell but i will be getting a 338 fed in a light weight in the near future.

"Any thoughts on the 338 federal?"

When I think of the 338 Federal I think of the 358 Winchester. The 358 is a great cartridge but never really caught on unfortunately, and I don't think the 338 Federal will either.

The 338 Federal will also be compared to the 338 Win. Mag., and here it just doesn't measure up.

Why not? Why the 505 :p

Really, though - the 338 has a flat enough trajectory to hit anything you can hit with a 308, slightly more energy, and a bigger diameter. What's not to like?

shoots a 180 grainer same speed or a tad faster than a 30-06

bigger hole, advantage

lower bc and a bit more drop past 250 yards, disadvantage

they equal themself out IMO ;)

Shorter cartridge allows for a shorter action and a lighter/faster rifle.
It is also more efficient therefore should have modest recoil.
More choices are always better for us as hunters... WHY NOT?

For equlivent bullets, the SD would be poorer! IE a 180 grn 338 would have a poorer SD then a 180 grn .308 bullet. That means less ability to penetrate etc.

I would consider the 338-06 a better choice with better powder capicity!

Why the 505? just good enough to mash anything in it's path!!:D :D

338-06 better suited for 210-225 grainers

338 win mag better suited to 225-250 grainers

338 federal better suited to 180-210 grain :)

with a 185 tsx, in a 338 F, I wouldnt feel undergunned for anything in Canada, within 250 yards

Why shoot lightweight bullets in a med/big bore rifle?

Might as well shoot heavies in a .308 if your gonna shoot 180s in a 338/08.
