That's an interesting chart, but I've never had a 300 WM (a total of 5 or 6 now) that wouldn't do an easy 3150 fps with a 180 and they all did an easy 3000 fps with 200 grnrs.
Sorry guys 7MM Rem Mag and 300 WM. I know its hard to compare as it isn't a magnum, but it looks like it is producing magnum numbers as far as energy goes. Velocity is a bit down and i don't know about trajectory, my longest shots are under 400 yards. Most being 100-300 yards. Would be using it for a deer/elk/moose gun. I dont reload..yet. I will be within the next 4 years. I dont need the power of a .338 win mag or even a .300 WM but I really really like the fact of a .338 in a short action with moderate recoil and still hits hard.
Wouldn't be any "real world" difference between the 30/06 & 338Federal as well as a whole big list of similar chamberings.Personally I'd buy a 30-06 over a 338 Federal.

This chart outlines performance comparison and as you can see, the .338 Fed outperforms both the 7mm Mag and the .300 WM with less recoil.

.338 Federal Performance Comparison
I'm not seeing that. Perhaps you posted the wrong chart?
It's always interesting to see numbers posted which are the lowest one can find for a cartridge being "bashed", and the hottest one can find for the other. "My 338 WinMag with 250 grain PowerPoints out of a 18" barrel is slower than a 338 RCM with 210 Hornady Superformance out of a 24" bbl. Evidently the RCM outperforms the Winmag."
The 338 Federal is a necked up 308. There's no magic in it.
My biggest thing is ammo availability. I live in the boonies, but theres a store in town that can bring anything in for me. But if i ever go on a trip and forget/lose ammo then i'm hooped. However i wont be going on a trip anytime soon, if i do itll be through a major city (Regina, Saskatoon, Prince Albert) and should be able to find a box or 2 there.
