Cost mainly. I just got the rifle mainly for long range plinking, this is the 2nd bullet weight to try. At 3 + $ a boom, and a max of 20 rounds a trip to the range it adds up. I'll try heavier (300 gn+,) once I get the rifle broken in and get comfortable with it. I'm just getting to a barrel count of 140 rounds, and trying to build a ballistics chart for it. I'm getting it dialed in at 500m, and just added a garmin xenos chrony to my kit collection

Places to shoot long range (over 800y) are hard to find nowadays. Which 200gr bullets are you using and how much are they? I load 88.5 gr of h1000 with 285 eldm @ 2790 fps. Lighter 200gr bullets uses 10g more powder and won’t stabilize well with such a fast twist rate.

I’m currently working on a new build as well. An this rifle is not cheap to feed as I get prepped for it with components. I’ve let the barrel maker decide on length but it will likely be longer that 28” a throated for 300gr projectiles. Definitely agree heavier would be better for that twist rate but they aren’t as easy to get or find. I run the 225 in my 338 RCM which is nowhere near the case capacity. (Also trying the 185s)

Just waiting on Black Friday sales to pickup some projectiles. Either 285gr or heavier will be my choices.

What’s the COAL on those handloads?

Ive got 3 places 1km plus that i can use at least till i can't snowmobile to them. My range is 617m and kamloops is 1 km if i buy a membership there. A factor as to why 250 grain bullets is availability, I couldn't get to the Chilliwack show due to pneumonia, I would of stopped in at Cabelas so I don't have to pay for shipping. Cheap I mean thrifty Scots I am.

Hmmm try the Hornady ELD 285gr match with whatever powder. Cheap bullets that do amazing long range impacts. Lots of impressive 3 shot groups at 1760 yards but I am trying to reach out farther. What twist?
Same barrel different stock, after I posted.

Thrifty and 338 Lapua are not something you typically see in the same sentence.
Like others have said the Hornady 285 ELDs are one of the best choices for this cartridge.
In my experience H1000 is the best powder that is more or less readily available again.
I don't shoot a factory 338 Lapua so can't help you with charge weight as the "Improved" chamber I run has a fair bit more case capacity.

Hey ATR I realize that the 2 things really don't get used together too much, BUT as a reloader my price is about 3 $ a pew, vs 10ish $ per buying factory ammo. I loved it when I could use my Modern Sporter in 6.5 Grendel (see below, stoppage was because of my brass catcher bag.) I've got a friend who owed me a few favors, in exchange he's going to ship me some 300 grain Lapua Scenars (2 bxs!) Now to play the waiting game, I also picked up a KG of N565 to go with them. That's what I mean about reducing costs, I've also got 2 lb of Sta-Ball HD put away as my zombie stock. Primers being my weak spot in consumables.

I recently stocked up on Fed 215M GM primers and they are only going to be for the .338. I will also be trying N565 and maybe N568 as I have a couple KG around thanks to my 6.5 PRC loadings.

I was looking at the 300gr Lapua Scenars as well. Very interested to see how they shoot for you. I see some on sale (not by much) so it’s a waiting game now.

I've been down with the pneumonia, but range wise I've gotten the useful data using 225 CX and 250 BTHP (match from Hornady that match their MATCH ammo) & H1000 out to 650m. That's the range max, so I'm just waiting till I can breathe properly. I bought some 1ce fired Lapua brass from CanadianGunslinger a few days b4 this strike happened, now it's stuck in the system. Whenever it arrives I'll do a few test loads and bring my established load out to the long range area. Man, I hate to think how much a ladder test will be to run........

Once you have a 338 lapua you must never look at the bills to feed it, if so it ain’t the right gun for you.

It's my midlife crisis little red sports car as a rifle, LOL. I admit its nostalgia from my army days, and I admit that getting about 80 rounds from a # of powder wasn't what I was expecting though. My CG63 6.5x55 WAS my powder eater previously, with my Grendel being my long range plinking rifle at 25-28 gn being my usual usage (bullet weight varies) I joked at my friends powder usage for his 300 WINMAG, "3 cps of powder then the bullet." Now the jokes on me!

The cost of projectiles and the amount of powder each shot consumes is the biggest problem with 338 LM.

I am just about to start in with a 300 Norma Mag, which should be a little easier to live with, cost wise, without compromising long range performance. In some ways the 300 NM offers better long range performance than the 338.

Yes it's over a buck a bullet. It doesnt matter maker, it will cost more than 1 maple buck. Powder, the H1000 is even more then 1 maple buck per reload. Then there's the cost of the hard to find LRMP, those are running from 17c to 22 cents nowadays. Yes definitely not cheap to run one of these, I brought my CZ527 6.5 Grendel out, and as I was helping a friend zero a scoped SMLE I crunched numbers. It's considerably cheaper to shoot great bullets, powder, and primers (6.5 Grendel or x55,) than good ones in 338. LOL why I do this to myself I don't know.

Well I got my 300 gn Scenars from Tesro and a kg of VV N565, now I have to do a ladder test to get the optimal load. EEEEEEEEKKKKK it'll be pricey, but well worth it in the end. This way I'll have 4 different weight bullet loads to fall back on, if we start seeing the powder primer bullet shortages like in previous years. From the 4 (225, 250, 285, 300 GN) weights I'll have 3 powders (H1000, STA-BALL HD & N565) And 400 cases that I'll be annealing and slowly adding to.
The hospital changed their medical opinion of me, not pneumonia its bronchitis. A few new puffers and pills and I'm definitely on the mend. So I'm hoping to have a range day soon.

So here's my two choices for plinking longer range, 225 gn hunting type BTSP Bergers and 300 gn SCENARs LAPUA. Whe I got the Bergers yesterday I also got 3# of H1000. I don't think I need to buy any components for a while !

That should last you a little bit! Let me know how the Lapua scenars shoot. I just put in an order for some 285gr ELD-Ms cause I was ordering other Hornady stuff so figured I’d try them. Mind you my rifles still nowhere in sight haha.
