Also is $3500 for a sako trg42 without optics a good price??

Edit: I asked this question for my uncle who is a Yukon native who I let read the responses to the first question. His exact words were "heavy? I'm gonna be shooting from the back of a snow mobile. Do they expect me to carry the buffalo too?"

Sorry for confusing everyone with the bc flag and east coast location.

for the caliber why not if you can handle it, carry it and shoot it well and of course after a very good hunting bullet selection.

for the price dont have a clue?

when are you coming up here?

That rifle would be about my last choice for hunting, take a peak at the weight, especially with glass on top. Awkward, nearly impossible for an offhand shot, muzzle braked, etc. It's a funky light speed tactical gun that you'll find hinders you rather than helps you on your hunt. Boring as it is, what you need is a plain jane Ruger or Winchester bolt action in .300 Mag.

If you really want that rifle then that's fine, but lots get killed with everyday rifles in everyday calibers.

I'm not really sure if the TRG 42 in .338 Lapua will give you any better chance than a Stevens 200 in 30-06, but if that's what turns your crank, then go for it.

Remember you have to haul that around! Git'r done. Not MY first choice for the numerous reasons mentioned above....and the price tag over and above that expensive adventure.

Good luck.

The price sounds good I think my buddy paid 4800.00 plus 600.00 for base, plus 600.oo for bipod then he threw a mark4 on top and come in at 23lbs.I think a 338 wm would be a good buy in whatever make you like.

Yes, that's what you need.

Unless you are thinking of actually going to the Yukon and shooting it from there? Then you could use something lighter, easier to handle.

That would work? But like everyone else says why would you want to take that hunting.....it would be a huge pain in the but! If you want a .338 buy a regular win mag or .340 weatherby. The lapua doesn't give you much advantage until 4 or 5 hundred yards. Are you being serious or just trying to stir the pot?

Use whatever snaps your bubble gum! ;)

Only thing depends if you are reloading or not, I believe most loaded ammunition is match grade.

Nosler has some new long range Accubond bullets available as well as the other common styles in other manufacturers.

If its the "338 lapua" you're hooked on get a weatherby accumark in lapua. It'll handle a lot nicer for a hunting rifle and still look ###y. Mind you I've never had any accumark shoot that great, not nearly as good as any vanguards I've owned.

The .338 Lapua has the ballistics to make it suitable for hunting big heavy game like bison, when its loaded with a good bullet. I think that loaded with a .338/310 gr Woodleigh, the Lapua would do just fine. But a hunting rifle and a target rifle are two different things, and shooting a .338 Lapua in an 8 pound hunting rifle from field positions, is an acquired taste. While I haven't had the opportunity to shoot a .338 Lapua, I do shoot big case .375s, .416s, and my dinky little .458, all of which probably provide a similar sensation. Given your budget, you could do worse than a .340 Weatherby, if you like the .338 bore size and want to spend a great deal of money on brass, or you could try a .338 Ultra. Any difference in practical performance between it and the Lapua is mostly imaginary. By the way, bison are pretty big, even a small bison is pretty big, so your rifle doesn't have to shoot like a varmint rifle to get a good hit. But I think you should choose a bullet that will produce a large wound diameter and penetrate 30" or so.

You'd be better served by a TRG-S in .338 Lapua if you can find one, of course. As others pointed, the TRG-42 is a pretty heavy rifle.

Buy it for the fun at the range. As mnetioned already the TRG-42 be too heavy to pack IMO in the Yukon, but to each their own.

IMO, since you mentioned SAKO and want bigger caliber, better off with a new Sako Grizzly or Black Bear in 9.3x62 or the 9.3x66 (370Sako Mag), or maybe consider the Kodiak or Brown Bear in 338WM.

Since you're not from the Yukon I assume you're going on a guided hunt?

Lots of good choices but a heavy rifle would be my last choice.
