338 lapua for Yukon bison?

A rancher friend in Saskatchewan uses a 22 Hornet when he is butchering Bison.
His cousin in the Yukon prefers a 460 Weatherby when he hunts them... overkill ?... maybe, maybe not.
In both instances they drop on the spot.

aren't they considered like a ground squirrel like you don't need a licence?

If you're not packing it for miles apon miles it would be neat for sure. I've never hunted in the yukon, if quads and the such can be used to access good areas then the extra weight probably wouldn't matter all that much as long as you were shooting from a rest of some type...like others have said, off hand shooting would most likely put you at a disadvantage though.
enjoy

I have to join the advice to the OP that I do not see that particular rifle as a good hunting rifle at all. The cartridge would certainly work, although it is far from "necessary" to use that round, but the rifle would never be my choice for a hunting trip of any kind.

I helped 3 friends get buffalo and they were all taken with a 300 mag. You just need good bullets and know where the lungs are sitting on the buffalo. they are alot lower then a moose or an elk.

Anything but. One of the most coveted draws in BC and Alberta. There are often however stray Bison in a buffer zone between Wood Buffalo National Park, TB infected, and the clean Zama herd, those can be hunted with CO coordination. Access however is quite challenging for most folks, as it's one of the most remote areas of the Alberta, or Western Canada for that matter. I've seen more than one hunter spend a fortune on gear, even aerial scouting, and return empty handed after a very hard week or two in the muskeg. Winter on sleds is the only way to do it in my mind.

they re higher than Dall sheep nowadays up here ...

ill quote myself : if you can handle, carry and shoot it why not ???!!!

when are you coming here?

all the best.

Like everyone else I'd suggest something lighter... :)

My next bison hunt I'm taking my s/s T/C Prohunter 22" barreled 375H&H scope included = 7.5lbs I would load it with 250gr TSX and/or 300gr Partitions and my 21" barreled Rem 700 LSS in 375RUM scope included it weighs appr 9.5lbs I would load it with 300gr A-Frames and/or 350gr TSX.

The 338 LM will work fine on bison. Ballistically speaking it and the 340 Wby and the 338 RUM are within 50 fps of each other with similar barrels and bullets (yes I own samples of all three ). My LM is a Sako TRG-S, which is very easy to pack and shoot. I would not take a TRG up bison hunting (did the AB Caribou Mountains bison hunt some years back, rough place to hunt ), but might have when I was young. - dan

Surely this is a joke, right? Hunting bison in the Yukon ain't a drive up and shoot 'em proposition. These are some of the spookiest animals we have now, they hear an engine at 1/2 mile and they're GONE!!! Stalking on foot is the only way to get into reasonable shooting range consistently. You're hunting in the snow sometimes 2 feet deep and possibly in -40 deg C. You want to pack that heavy ridiculous POS to say you killed a bison with it, that's your business.
Of coarse the cartridge is capable, that's obvious, so is anything from the 30-06 up loaded with good penetrating bullets. Hell, I've killed 2 with a bow!!
If you intend to hunt the Yukon bison as a non resident then you MUST use an outfitter, he'll have a fit if you show up in camp with THAT rifle and expect him to take you bison hunting with it. I just don't understand what goes on in some peoples minds, pay big bucks to go on a non resident, guided bison hunt and then SUPER HANDICAP themselves with the likes of this POS.............HHHMMMMMMM..............

Not like you to hold back ... why don't you really tell him off ! ;)

Holy smokes!! Didn't know he was making you carry it! ;)

Douglas is able to help people when they re serious ...

next year maybe the resident will be able to do special guiding for bison hunting so who knows will help or laugh in our neck of wood.

all the best.

Really ?? If thats the case I'll be knocking on Douglas's door for sure !!!

The price sounds good I think my buddy paid 4800.00 plus 600.00 for base, plus 600.oo for bipod then he threw a mark4 on top and come in at 23lbs.I think a 338 wm would be a good buy in whatever make you like.

A TRG42 weighs 10lbs.....what is your friend's bipod, scope and base made out of to add 13 lbs? Check your scale.
