338 lapua in rem model 700

I agree, at $1250 count me in for sure. I couldn't build one for that!!!

I am in for that price too!!!

Guy's the topic is on the rifle not ammo so why not start a new thread about ammo?and not HighJack this one?;)

that being said,I for one want a 338LM having had a chance to put some rounds down range with it I was very happy with it and could see it as a awesome longrange hunting round:ninja:

Now that a bunch of people have taken delivery of your their new HS, I'll be patiently awaiting the range results from 300GR SMK. I betting the velocity difference will be more then just 100fps. People buying these guns want to play the long range game so I guess we'll see what happens. For of you that have them now, put together a wicked load and come out to Summerland this spring because it's going to get interesting.

I just got back from fireforming my brass. Now I just have to wait for a half decent day to start load development and I'll be ready.

Oh well, since we have already pretty much hijacked this thread (Sorry)

Black Hills lists their ammo as 250gr MK 2950fps, 300grMK 2800fps. No barrel length listed but I really can't see it being over 26". Not seen any real world feedback so we will need to see how close that is.

I believe that Lapua ammo was pretty much right on the estimate of 250gr Scenar at 3000fps (the orig design parameters for this cartridge).

Let's see what production rifles produce...

Jerry

PS As already mentioned (and sticking to the thread), with Rem making 338LM ammo, the odds of a rifle is very good.

Since this thread got hijacked long ago I don't feel as bad going off course again. Not being a large caliber guy myself I am surprised at the wide interest in 338 Lapua. When we booked the HS rifles and then the additional Rem 700's in this caliber I was worried about them selling in a reasonable time frame. Well the response to this thread and PM's I was sent has changed all that. Also all the HS rifles (with the exception of the 28" take-down) have been sold. I will be ordering heavy in this caliber for the future and also try to get more detailed info at the Shot Show from Remington about this model and expected delivery times. Phil.

Unfortunately, after the first box of ammo, the luster is going to dull really quickly. Tacti-Bruising is not much fun.

Phil, when at SHOT, look at any muzzle brake and recoil pad suppliers that are reasonably priced. I bet you will sell a brake/pad for every rifle you sell :)

We saw that when the RUM family was released. ALOT of slightly used rifles for sale soon after release.

The 33LM is going to boot something fierce without the proper muzzle attachements. Also, with the lack of US manf components and the overall high cost of available stuff, interest is going to be stunted.

However, all this interest may allow Hornady to release their 338 AMAX. That could drop the cost of bullets substantially. Just need to hear from Win/Rem on component brass for the same price as the RUM's.

Good time to be in the brake business ...
Jerry

Jerry, the lack of American componets has not stunted the huge succes of .338LM. In Canada we sell all the brass and bullets we can import and Lapua is having to increase production capacity for the 250 grain Scenars. Serious shooters for the most part have not worried about higher-cost Lapua brass or bullets, as percentage-uniformity- ratio and longevity assuers good investment and contribution to success. If we listened to you as a consultent we would be bankrupt instead of being so busy it is difficult to keep up. Gee, should be cancel our BO(we're sold out) of Scenars?

I do agree with you wholeheartedly on the brake issue.

Peter

Jerry, thanks. I reallly do wonder where and how far the
.338LM will go? This is an extreme cartridge with limited range application due to increased safety-template requirements and is nuts for close-range deer, although some Westeners like to use it for longrange hunting. Usually, most users seem to have above average income and some enjoy having a round designated as the MRSR for Canada and many other countries(about 50).

Just checked brass sales and .338LM is 7th of the 15 calibres we sell, ahead of 30-06, .220 Russ., .300Win Mag, 6.5X55, .222 and so on. Of course this is not indicitive of guns out there, just demand for .338LM brass.

Geez, we really are out there. What was the question?

Peter

I believe the original question had to do with trigger adjusting or scope choice????:D :runaway:

The 338LM is going to get its 15mins in the limelight. Lots will be sold because of its present applications (just imagine what will happen if the US officially adopts it:eek:). Unfortunately, the vast majority will never be shot to 1/4 of its potential (safe guess as most of these boomers rarely get used as designed)....pity really.

Those that do shoot it, will quickly get a hang over (headache and wallet ache) but keep it around cause its a big boomer...and serious cool factor. 2009 will be a great time to pick up a Rem slightly used for cheap.

Go buy stock in muzzle brake companies.

Like the RUM and WBY's, more fun then the average shooter wants or is prepared for. For those that appreciate its purpose, good stuff but they are few and far between. But they do shoot ALOT per capita.

I am sure you know I do ALOT of LR shooting. Over the years, the big boomers get used less and less. Now I am really enjoying the challenges of the 223. Hope to get it past 1200yds this spring - goal is one mile if the bullet doesn't tumble.

I am sure you see the popularity of the 6BR in brass sales (your #1 seller?). That is really going to be what survives and thrives with the majority of shooters. Super accurate, mild recoiling, affordable cartridges, with an effective range of at least 1 mile.

How many people truly hunt beyond 400yds????

The 338LM, 300RUM, 50BMG, are all wonderful cartridges and I truly enjoy them when I get a chance to play. But they are a bit too much fun to go pop 50 primers a day with (factory 338LM about $6 per bang, reloads about $1.50-2 per pop!).

Sort of like those 2004 Ferraris with 2500 orig miles.....SAD

As long as us poor gun builders are in business, we'll be pushing the Edges and Lapuas out the door faster then we can build them. I don't see people buying more economy cars because the H2s are hard on fuel.

It's a shape HS went with a fruitted barrel or else, like you say, muzzle brakes would be something to seriously look at. I think where we're going to see a climb in business is rebarreling with heavier contour and longer of course with the aggressive brake.

With more and more bullets coming out, we'll be testing them and giving free advice on what works and what doesn't.

Most interesting specs.

A 29" heavy barrel barrel with suppressor/scope/special rail/sling/ loaded w- 5rds weighing under 9lbs. This I have to see.

Sounds like a most excellent rig. Wonder how much this version will sell for and when will it become a reality.

I hope that suppressor is a good muzzle brake too. 8 to 9lbs...OUCH!!!
