Bearhunter, wow. I am tryoing to source a cost effective barrel, but if I go with a blank I will need a reamer and gauges, but if I go with a chambered barrel there up in price. Got some number crunching to do.
If you can't afford to do it, don't. As I see it, this is going to cost you close to a thousand dollars, if you can't do the work yourself.
Put an ad ine the EE for a used, already chambered take off barrel. It's likely someone has one laying around doing nothing.
Shooting the 338 LM is for someone with Sado-Masochistic tendencies. You have to like to suffer. If you want to do one, make darn sure headspace and chamber dimensions are tight.
I was in no way suggesting that you should repeat our experiment. It worked for us and yes, the rifle is still being used as a 458 Win Mag and yes, it is still a single shot. It gets used three time per year. All three shots are used for a sighter and a moose. The load has been cut back to reduce felt recoil and it's still brutal.
I called him this afternoon. Luckily he was home. He works away from home and is gone for two weeks at a time. We will be getting together this summer. He was a good friend and missed our good times, playing with old rifles and doing rediculous stuff with them.
He's changed a lot over the years, so have I. Hopefully not so much we can't enjoy ourselves.
