338 Lapua Recoil

Talk to Kirby Allen a out his Painkillers. He’s pretty good about matching the right brake to your rifle to get it to a neutral state so you can see your hits. It brought my 375 Cheytac to pussy levels of recoil, and a starting load with that thing is 130 grains of Retumbo🤣

The factory Brake on my Rem. MLR works very well prone, feels like a stout .308. Pretty cool when the muzzle blast smokes the grass.

I see in your picture that you are running the OEM Sako brake. I didn't mind the recoil so mutch but I found that the gun jumped and it took a long time to get back on target. I changed the OEM brake out with a Cadex MX1 brake and now the gun is more managable but now I need to develop a new load for it as it doesn't like the load that I was successful with the OEM brake.

I have the exact same rifle TRG42 in 338L and my reload is 94g Retumbo pushing a 250g Scenar. Have sold a couple of Remington police models because of recoil and thought this Sako would be different. Wrong !! Purchased a Grizzly brake and recoil subsided from really bad to just still bad. I’m a recoil pussy, I tolerate it because the rifle is extremely accurate. It’s my 500 yard plus rifle for gophers, badgers and coyotes. The brake is ‘tough’ on the windshield if shooting off the truck hood.lol

OP,
I do not own a 338 LM but i have shot a sako like the one pictured a number of years ago. I have no idea the ammo but I remember being astonished by the grain weight. I shot maybe 15 rounds or so.
I found the recoil pretty manageable with the brake that was on it when shooting prone. Loud as EFF tho. With ancient dust sifting down from the range roof with every shot.
I no longer shoot prone due to injury (i also no longer shoot thumpers) but even with my lesser short and AR actions, there is more “felt” recoil on the bench than prone.
Check out some MDT vids on natural firing position and how to position your bod relative to recoil path. It helps.
Or leave the 338LM to young men in uniform. Lol.
bipods are not part of mitigating recoil in my experience although they do add mass which does help marginally.
If u are shooting 338 LM however, a bipod wud be standard I wud think. What else??
