A friend who is involved in buying equipment for a sniper outfit asked me to comment on the Laua 338 as a potential long range caliber. All I know is that it is expensive.

Anyone here have any comments? Any 1000 yards or longer shooting results?

Are you at all serious here? If so, this scares the Hell out of me for everyone concerned. I sure wouldn't want anyone in charge of procurement and equippment selection that didn't have a competent understanding of either the requirement or the tools required to do the job.

I'm going to say this, "Smells Like Troll's Spirit".

I bought what I thought was a .338 once. Turned out is was actually chambered for $5 bills. What a bloody mistake.

The 338LM is a very capable LR cartridge. The ballistics are right between the BMG and 308. There is certainly enough field data in the 'working' world to draw very positive conclusions.

Downsides are the goofy head size limiting action choices and raising costs. The only supply of brass is Lapua which is indicative of the cost of shooting. Other makes are sure to follow but have not seen any first hand.

Factory loads are few and really use two bullets. The 250gr Scenar or 300gr MK. Both are superb LR bullets which smack real well when they arrive. Hornady is supposed to come out with ammo/components as is Rem????

I have seen a 338LM with 250gr Scenar load shoot really well at 1mile. The launcher was a SAKO TRG.

There are many other LR cals that will do the same thing but not arrive with the same energy. I am sure you are aware of the 6.5 and 7mm choices.

Having a hoot with my 6.5 Mystic all the way to 2400yds.

Ruag make 338LM . I is said in some cases to be better than the Lapua stuff. I believe the Aussie are using Ruag ammo in there 338's

RUAG does indeed have factory ammo out for it as does Hornady Mark A. has some in his store. Cases apparently can be formed from .416 Rigby cases as well, although I know nobody that has bothered.

Doesn't mean its cheap, but it is an awesome, accurate long range cartridge.

looks like 3 or 4 people already more qualified to be "involved in buying equipment for a sniper outfit "

RUAG ammo is used by the British, German, and Australian armies. It is the best there is bar none. However RUAG does not sell components.

Tell you what, since I'm in sales and have SOME;) working knowledge of what the 338LM is capable of, how about I subcontract myself to your friend, you sit back and relax and I'll do what I do and cut him in on the much larger sale. That way, you and him won't look like total idiots and he keeps his job.

By the way, what sniper outfit is this anyway? More details please.

I don't know the guy, but he has definitely contributed some very insightful comments in the past. While I admit the context of this question is weird, don't crap on the guy too much. I'm pretty sure he is no troll.

Wow, not the response I was expecting...

My friend is an accomplished shooter who was transferred by his employer to a position where his shooting knowledge and interests would be useful.

I have filled military contracts for super accurate 50 cal sniper ammo, and have been involved with the testing of military 50 cal ammo and rifles. I would be pleased to share 50 cal info with him, but he was looking for 338 feedback.

I have competed against shooters using the 338 Lap but did not pay much attention to them, other than the rifles were loud and I did not want to be close to them. I wish I had paid more attention and I wish I had picked their brains.

My friend has a lot of knowledge and a lot of experience. In fact, he has so much experience that he has learned that it is a good idea to ask questions before making decisions. He asked me if I knew anything that would be helpful.

In the real world it sometimes turns out that after making a decision, someone you know might say "You bought what!! I just finished a two week exercise with Seal Team 3 testing that ammo, and we found out that….” So he has been asking around. A prudent thing to do.

As it happens I know nothing about the Lap 338. But I was pretty sure there would be users on this forum, so I solicited your input.

I don’t think it prudent to mention what outfit he is with. He is a serving officer in a military we would all consider a long time ally of Canada.
