I am looking for a one mile cartridge, it looks to me like the 300 will be SS farther than the 338, but the 338 has better transonic potential. What are your takes on these cartridges?

I think if I go 338 ill be mag loading because I will probably go with a TRG, if I go 300 ill build one single feed. I have not found a factory 300NM I like.
This is not set in stone just thoughts... if there is a huge benefit to single feeding a 338 I could go that way.

338 lapua is ok in a single shot. Sucks in a mag set up cause you cant get the bullet out of the case far enough. 300 gr in a single feed is better then a 300 NM if your shooting over 2500 to 3000 yards. If not the 230 bergers in the 300 NM will run ya flatter and faster then the lapua and with considerable less concussion and recoil.

Yeah I keep leaning towards the 300NM, im thinking 28-30" with at a Stiller Tac 338 to build the 300NM, know of any other good actions with the large bolt face that are in the same price range? 1600$ish

I had Insite Arms chamber a Benchmark 9 twist in 300NM last year.
On a Stiller TAC338.

Also installed a Heathen brake.

The Stiller TAC338 was a 338 Lapua Imp before that. I don’t think I’ll ever spin that one back on.

The 300NM with the Heathen brake is a whole new shooting experience.

On another note, the Sask big game draw should be out next week....
300 Norma Mag, Hornady 212gr ELD-X, Retumbo and hopefully an elk tag.

As someone who’s had both, and done load work ups on both, I’ll go with the 300 Norma everyday of the week.
Lots to like about it over the 338L, for me anyways. Flatter shooting and less recoil are my main advantages. For me, it meant more accuracy and easier to spot misses.
The 300 Norma brass is not amazing though, some guys have issues with it, and the Norma likes to form carbon rings in the throat, that you have to stay on top of or it gives you pressure. Borescope really helps here to diagnose that.
I have both barrels for my Desert Tech SRS, and haven’t spun my 338L barrel on once in the last 2 1/2 Years, since Insite did up a 300 Norma for it.
338 is a good cartridge too, and would not totally be a wrong answer though either, lots of components available, factory loaded ammo is pretty good, and Lapua brass is quite nice.
