Hey gunner's
Got a question for u guys. My cousin just bought a new rifle....It's a remington 700 chambered for the .338 lapua round.Yesterday He went to the range to try it out. The sound from the shot's were setting the car alarms off in the parking lot. after a few rounds an older man came up to us and started questioning us about the rifle, and were my cousin was able to obtain a military/police rifle. Also he took out a note pad and wanted our names. I found this very strange. Have any of u ran into this issue before. This rifle was purchased from a normal gun store

The .45-70 was a military cartridge at one time too. The guy doesn't know what he is taliking about when it come to firearms. (look under Fudd).
That being said, is the range templated for the safe discharge or a .338 LM? There are military ranges here in Ontario that will not allow .338 LM because of the safety template.

did you give him your name? you should have asked if he was an R.O or if he's a volunteer at the range. could have been an off duty officer who doesn't know about gun regs?

I know he did not work at the range, at least not that day. As he was shooting as well. To add a bit more to the story, my neighbor told me my home was visited by 3 or 4 RCMP including K-9. I keep out of trouble and i have no idea why they were there. I didnt give my name, but the range has my info though. Im going to assume all is good.

Unless you were doing something you shouldn't be, tell him politely to mind his own business. I have had fudds tell me that shooting an ak-47 was illegal. (I was shooting a bone stock CZ 858....)

Who ever that guy was I would have told him to "eat S**t" some times when I here stupidly like this it makes me think things are getting worse for our community! What range was this...

I know the range here locally also has a maximum caliber allowed and it stops at .338 LM. Check with the range officials and if they give you the green light don't worry about it.

According to the Mission Rod & Gun regs:

"Types of firearms and ammunition must comply with the posted Range Rules and Restrictions.

.357 Magnum is maximum allowable energy on the Pistol Range.

.338 Lapua is maximum allowable energy on the Rifle Range as designated by the Chief Provincial Firearms Officer."

So you should be in the clear with that rifle, although it could well annoy some people shooting around you :p, esp. if it's setting off the car alarms. Given the recoil and noise, I doubt that your friend fired off that many rounds! (I've often wished we had some sort of acoustical baffles out at the Mission range, to help take the bite out of rifles like that. It isn't much fun shooting next to someone with a ported 7mm Mag. either.)

Maybe the guy who hassled you was just upset because it was shaking his dentures. I certainly wouldn't have told him to "eat s**t" but I would have politely asked who he was and what his authority was. You might contact the Rifle Chair, although if you don't know who the guy was there may not be much point.

:) Stuart

what kind of dork carries a note pad anyhow. maybe he was on a range recon patrol. I think i know what a fudd is now. This is why i try and stay away from the range as much as possible. i will admit it's loud. got to double up on the ear protection. But still not sure why he would go through the trouble to ask so many questions.

Sorry to pry but is there anymore to this story ?

Did you find out who this guy was , have you seen him since , did you call the RCMP and find out why they were at your house ?

What did you tell the guy lol dont tell me you gave him your information .

LOL, i know the type....i've been on our indoor 20 yd pistol range with my 10-22 (heavy barrell, bi-pod, etc.) just after installing a new scope (wanted to get a feel where it was shooting before taking it to the longer range), had an 'ole guy there tell me i wasn't allowed to shoot a "sniper rifle" indoors !!!.......can you belive that !!

I wish there was more to it.but there isnt. I wasnt home when the fuzz showed up but my truck was there. my neighbor says they just checked my place out, didnt knock, just stood at my front door trying to see in, laughing and chatting with each other. As for the guy at the range my cousin gave his name to, i dont know i was shooting while they talked. But we share the same last name. I have nothing to hide from the police man, like i said i stay out of trouble Im even a road star so it aint my driving. For all i know they maybe unrelated. Im not going to call them to find out. If they are after me for something ill know soon enough.

Tell him to piss off. If you have a licence and registration you're valid. There are enough people trying to take guns away.
